the 1.01 release came out today - addressing some of the issues people have had. you can either use the software update tool, or download it from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/aperture101update.html (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/aperture101update.html)
an osx dot release should be out soon, too, to fix the raw conversion issues and add support for newer cameras.

i love it. there are some issues, but overall it's a fantastic addition (or almost more correctly put, subtraction) to the workflow. this 1.01 update fixes the autostack SBOD (spinning ball of death) and makes the rest of it feel snappier. personally, i feel it was $700 well spent and i know it's going to continue to improve. one thing, it relies pretty heavily on Core Image, so having a fast video card is going to help more than faster multiprocessors. i'm going to pickup an x850 in the states next month. but i'm happy with its performance even on my 1.67 powerbook, too. filtering is noticably slower, however.
the image organisation tools are outstanding. shooting sporting events and then reviewing them quickly with the subject is unbelivably quick now. and it's quick to add minor changes and corrections without going out to cs2.
i shot a few kids for my wife's friend's shop mailer last week, and the process went something like this: note -for this session, as i'm still experimenting, i started a whole new library on a portable drive. raw conversion is still having some issues (should be resolved in osx 10.4.4- due any day, now) so i pre-converted with c1. this step will be eliminated shortly.
shoot | import .cr2 files via card reader to powerbook | convert to 8 bit .tif w/ exif | import into aperture with autostack on - ~ 8 seconds | 'pick' best images in stack and rate the best images overall using '-' and '=' keys | basic processing in aperture | send any to Cs2 that needed additional touchup processing.
that's it. extremely quick!!!

I would hope that for $700 it would be a stand-alone product (and not require any CS2 tweaking). What is it lacking that CS2 is required?

it's not designed as a stand alone product. also, $700 is aussie dollars - $500 for you guys. it's designed to replace c1/adobe bridge/iview/dpp/etc. and also provide catalog, metadata, ranking, and all with the original raw file intact. it basically applies the processing (sharpening, exposure, etc.) in real time. you can always go back and decrease any amount of any processing at any time. and you can make additional 'versions' as well which are just new ways of looking at the unmodified file.
it's designed to save time. cs2 is great for lots of detailed touch up and major work, as well. for example in aperture, you can't apply processing to a local area - it's the entire image or nothing. so when the shot is pretty close to right, you don't need cs2 at all.
where it really saves time is the stacking. it 'groups' shots together based on time. so you can group shots taken within an adjustable time period from the last shot. they can be 'collapsed' so you look at a representation of the shots. going through a few hundred or thousand shots per event is now much quicker than, say breeze browser or ACDSee, etc.

i really like it. i received the student discount on the program, so that was pretty sweet but i dont know if after having used it, id have payed full price. on my dual 2.0 G5, stacking takes forever...i assume thats what you are talking about "the spinning ball of death" but it seems like aperture greatly improves workflow...but im still getting used to it

Results wide I am very happy with RSE/RSP.. but I have to say. one thing that REALLY appelas to me about Aperure is the flexibility and smart use of screen real estate. I use a dual monitor rig and RSP simply has NO ability to be split to the second monitor. I'd love to have browser tabs and tools on the second monitor and leave the primary for the image I'm editing.. but no can do.
Ive not used Aperture ,. but even from the screen shots it looks very clear that I could do exactly this.

tjburns - get the patch, stacking i almost instantaneous, now.
CDS - yes, i'm doing exactly that with my dual monitor setup.

Wow so glad to hear about the positive results.
blackviolet, my wife's running an iMac G5 1.8 17" 256mb RAM, she is getting a 1G ram stick for xmas that she doesn't know about, but I plan to get her another gig shortly there after. Do you think I'll have any issues running Aperture on her Mac, I will meet the minimums just want to know if the Min is really the min.
I am so excited about getting this program to be able to process large batches of RAW files, oh joy...Does apple have a users guide for this program yet? I taught myself PS7 using the official product manual.

should be fine - it's within the minimum specs. it will certainly run faster than on my powerbook - there is an obvious difference between the powerbook and my dual powermac, but i have still spent more time on the powerbook and i don't feel it's slow.
once you put the 1 gig stick in, download the app checker from the Aperture site - it will confirm that it will in fact run on your wife's iMac. there still isn't a user's guide - only a getting started.

Lol. I didn't notice the date as I brought it up under new posts.
But you certainly found the most sarcastic way possible to point it out. But, that may just be me.
You also might want to check out that marvelous software that checks your spelling for you!
