Hello!

I have an EOS 20D and will buy a 5D. My current all-round flash is the speedlite 550 EX. Is it worth buying the 580 EX to go with my new 5D?

I consider myself an advanced amateur and I use it for normal day by day photography (coupled with an MR 14 EX for Macro).

Not sure if the new specs of the 580, mainly the ones concerning the use with DSLR, are worth spending more money, or if the 550 EX will do the trick.

I already have a good range of lenses from my previous EOS-3, so I don't plan to spend more money on glass...

On another note, Is there any use to my old 430 EZ with a DSLR? Never really tried it after I bought the 20D/550EX. Can it be used on it? or can I slave it manually to the 550/580?

Thanks,

inikay.

If you are going to keep the 20D after you buy the 5D, then it would make sense to also keep the 550EX and buy a new 580EX for the 5D. However, if you're not going to keep the 20D, then personally, I don't think that it would make a whole lot of practical sense to replace the 550EX with a 580EX unless you really need the extra little enhancement and you think the extra price is worth it.

The 430EZ can be fired in full power mode on the 5D (unless the 430EZ can also be set to manual) but it won't fire on the 20D. And, unfortunately, the 430EZ can not be slaved to a 550/580EX master.

You don't have the EOS 3 anymore? If you don't keep the 20D and you don't have an EOS 3, go for the upgraded flash. That just makes sense. If you still have your EOS 3, the 550EX was made for that camera. I still have an EOS 3 and I use it from time to time, and without the built-in flash, the 550EX is it. But if you are into digital now, upgrade. It's not that expensive.

Thanks for the replies. I will pass the 20D to my son along with the 550. I will buy the 580 for myself.

Thanks for the help,

Inikay.
