I just bought my 10D but for the short term am very limited in what lenses I can buy. I've looked at the 24-85mm zoom, the 28-135mm IS zoom, and the 50mm 1.8 fixed lens all from Canon. I also read about the new Tamron 28-75 2.8 zoom which is of course a bit faster than the Canon zooms. I've thought about getting the 50 1.8 and 24-85 Canon combination as the A choice; the 28-135mm IS as the B choice; and possibly the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 and Canon 50 F1.8 as a possible C choice. I know there are many opinions but would appreciate feedback and input. Particularly about going with Canon and Tamron.

I'm a 10D and Sigma owner,.. so you can take this with a grain of salt. :)
But from what I have gathered from lots of research and my own first hand experience is that Tamrom is now your third best choice for your Camera. Canon obviously is the way to go if you can afford the best lenses.
5 Years ago Tamron was considered a safer bet than Sigma,. but no longer. Sigma has made vast improvements in the design and manufacturing. There newer EX line is second only to Canon and Nikon. And yet struggling from being number two in town (behind Tamron sales wise until very recently) most of the Sigma lenses remain less expensive than there Tamron equivelents.
My beleif based on my research and first hand use is that Sigma is both a better lens and a better value than Tamron.
In short,. I would recomend Canon lenses as your Number One choice. Then look to Sigma if Canon prices are out of the question for the time being.

The Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 II is a no brainer, it is, dollar for dollar, the best value lens Canon have... I've got some beautifully sharp images from the 28-105 F/4-5.6 USM II, but you need to understand how to use a lens, not just point and shoot - for that, the 28-135 F/3.5-5.6 IS is the way to go...

Yep, the 50mm/1.8 is good value. I use as my standard lens. However you need to stop it down quite a bit to get sharp images.

I too was faced with same choices. I went with:
50 f/1.8 II - it really is a no brainer. Light, fast, and cheap.
28-135 IS f/3.5-5.6 - It's only $90 more than the 24-85; it's faster by 1 or 2 stops (due to IS), and has longer telephoto. Also, many have praised it here for the versatility and quality. The only drawback is the 4mm on the wide angle side.
Good luck.

24-85 for a "consumer lens" is very good as soon as you go to f8. It's quite sharp and I shot more than 100 pictures in Cuba last month with this lens.
The 70-200 f4L is on the way and will be the complement.
Anyway, a 12-70 f 2.8 would be very appraciated from Canon or Sigma to have a real equivalent (and more) to the 24-85
CANON 10D - CANON 24-85 - SIGMA 105/2.8 EX

Great info here folks.
When I started using my 10D last week, I ended up buying (because of price and the fact that my Sigma lens didn't work with the 10D) a Promaster 28-200 F3.6-5.6... which isn't all that bad, I guess. They say Tamron makes those lenses, but I got it purely for the price.
After reading the comments here, I have purchased: the Canon 75-300 EF F4-5.6 III, and Canon 50mm EF F/1.8 II.
I ended up ordering them from B&H Online.. and should get them tomorrow. Look forward to getting some great shots.
I think I'll have my fill of lenses - for now!

The 75-300 MKIII is a beautifully sharp lens, as long as you remember to keep your shutter speed up to the focal length... I've got an image from the weekend with it that's so sharp I cut my finger on it resizing it... I've been using it to disprove some of the 'soft' claims of both the lens and the camera... :-)

You may want to consider the Tamron 28-75 2.8f XR Di. I just purchased one with my D10 and I'm very happy with the output. I've only had it for two days but the pics that have come out of it have been stellar.

I just shot a NY Liberty basketball game with my 10D and the 70-200/2.8. The pictures were sharp with accurate color. The 2.8 gave me the ability to stop action using just the available light. I was 4 sections off the floor.
