I'm new here so I'm not sure if anyone' mentioned this before, but here's something I do at holiday gatherings that everyone seems to enjoy.
Throughout the gathering snap away at candids, group shots, the turkey or ham, people opening gifts, etc. Just document the day as it happens. Also don't forget the artsy shots of ornaments and decorations that make people go oooooohhhhh! Then, towards the end of the evening when everyone is stuffed beyond stuffed (I'm in the USA, this means full after eating :) ) put a Christmas CD in the CD player, hook up your camera to the TV and play a slide show of the day for everyone.
If you have a laptop that you can hook to a TV and that has slideshow software that will fade images from one to another, that's even better, but the point is also to not make it such a hassle that you don't enjoy the day yourself!
This has always gone over great at our family functions, hope it will for you too.
Happy Holidays to all!
