I was wondering who, if any, have used a Location Scout for one of their shoots. I've been exploring/capturing Dallas in every possible light for around two years now. In this time I've acquired a pretty healthy knowledge of various hot spots in every possible category.. From gritty urban decay, to upscale and modern..Point being, my buddy suggested that I take this knowledge and put it to good use after he saw one of these unique locations in a photo (below) (which he later ended up using in a shoot). He said a website and proper exposure could very well generate some side income.

I understand that A) location scouts are more popular in the film industry (which is fine, I'll take their money to), and B) Dallas is not the best city to launch such a project.

Having said that, would you ever consider using a scout? If so what would you pay for his/her services? Photos of various locales along with detailed info on each from all over the metroplex would be avail.

Any thoughts, advice or feedback is greatly appreciated.

This is the location that my friend ended up using. He had a young lady that wanted to do photos in her wedding dress against a gritty, defunct backdrop.. He saw this shot and thought it was perfect.. so did the bride.. he showed her the pic and around a month later we were on the roof of this old building shooting her in brilliant white wedding gown.. Which came out amazing I might add.. I'll ask if I can have one to post, but he's kinda funny when it comes to stuff like that. which is perfectly ok ;)

Thanks..

Justin

For starters, I like the image. Crop out the bit of sky though.

You're right about the bit about locale scouts mainly being used in the film industry. I've never used one, prefering instead to doing my own explorations.

Exploring on my own allows me to achieve several objectives : It helps me really be an explorer (no substitute for that, one has to do it oneself!), it expands my horizons and understanding of the world around me, it helps me catalog what I need to shoot when on assignment, and it helps me determine what time of the day I need to shoot at to get the best light, and the best angles. It also helps me get the pulse of a place, which is vital to creating a sense of place in travel photography.

Having said that, I've never been to Dallas, so I'm afraid I'm unable to comment on the specifics about the same.

Wish you luck for your project.

Merry Xmas,
