It is ok to use these right? I got some Duracell rechargers for Xmas...just making sure it is safe to use them...and do they really last that much longer?

Yes, and yes.
NiMH batteries will recycle your flash faster than alkalines, and contrary to the specs in the manual, they will last longer on a single charge, too.

I got a set of Sanyo 2500 Ni-Mh for Christmas. As soon as they were charged I put them in my 550Ex and already see better recycle time. I will probably pick up a couple more sets this week.

With the 580, I use the Duracell 2300 mAh and get 100-150 shots in a relatively dark space. Well worth the money. I've got 5 sets of batteries (also have a 420 to feed) and it ends up being pretty cheap using the rechargeables as they last quite a long time.

I’m using Camelion Ni-MH 2600 in my 580EX and the recycle time is amazingly faster then alkaline

These ones are Duracell 1800 mAh...they ok?I've been using NiMH batteries for at least the last 6 years - several different brands, some with as little as 1350 mAh. They have all worked fine in every device I tried to use them in, including a compact digital camera and several different flash units.

I have no doubt yours will work, too.
