Hello all, Great forum. Here's my 1st post.

I've seen several reviews & comparisons of this lens to the old and to the 28-135 IS lens which I now own. Some users feel that it is not worth the extra $ for the L lens. Others liked the old 28-70 2.8L better then the new, and on still other reviews, these with some pretty dramatic photos, the new 24-70 was liked so much the old 28-70 was retired in favor of the new lens.

However I have not seen any comparison of the auto focus speed in low (indoor) light compare between these two lenses. 28-70 and the 28-135? Esp in the 3' to 8' range. I'm taking (trying) to take pictures of high speed moving kittens. If you'd like to put your gear, digi camera, lenses, auto focus system and photo printer to the test, try it on short hair Blue or Platinum colored (grey) cats. Hard to focus on, and getting the printer to texture the fur properly, it likes to show ticking, also easy to over sharpen. Any suggestions here are welcom as well.

TIA

PS. do the extenders fit the 24-70 L lens.

I have the 28-135 and it does not focus well in low light. Wedding receptions where couples are dancing in low light can be very difficult.I have the 28-70L lens and it is very good under the same conditions.I'm sure the 24-70 has at least as good of a focusing system or better.

I never owned the 28-70L or 28-135IS, so can't give comparisons. I can tell you that the Canon TCs will not fit on the 24-70L.

The speed of lens focus has never given me pause for thought, and it takes great pictures. Check the link for the bee picture in the last paragraph for May 6:

I used the old 28-70L and liked it well enough. I now have the 24-70L as it was enough of an improvement in my eyes to make it worth the switch. It is a quick focusing lens but it really depends on the autofocus system that is driving it. I have never shot with the 28-135IS. I would have to say that the 24-70L is going to be faster. Larger aperature + USM = faster focus.

shooting kittens can be trying, have you tried setting focus and just waiting for the kittens to cross into the plane of focus? Give it a go and see what happens. You might find you don't need to replace your lens afterall.

Hi there,

I have had both 28-135 and 28-70.

The 28-70 L is superior to the 28-135.
If you use the 28-135 at F 8.0 results
are improving.

I didn't have the change to test the
24-70 yet, but the Luminous is pretty
positive about it:
