Well time marches on.....so I thought I would revive this idea.
The plan is a casual afternoon shoot somewhere close to East Auckland. Then back to my place in Howick for a swim, then a bbq dinner and a few beverages or whatever on Saturday the 7th of January.
Who's coming?
Any ideas for what to shoot?
Moppie

Will have a think about shoot topics though, the only thing that springs to mind is graveyards! sure you guys would like something more cheerful!

I will hopefully be in later on during the day, currently booked out at work during the day to work on a client site then though, oh well good $$$, and I can always go back on Sunday if it looks like it is going to be a late one.

Sounds cool. For some reason the 7th Jan is sticking in my head. I'm almost scared of already got something on that day.
Also still nothing about my camera.
I phoned them last week reminding them of the Consumer Guarantees Act, and I said as it's a "Serious Fault", ie camera won't even take a single photo, it's up to me, the consumer to decide whether full replacement, repair, or full money back. So I said that, and then they said it's still in for "assessment" and as soon as they know the error, and whether it's user error or a camera fault, they'll then decide whether to follow my request. It's only been 20 days since the camera broke.
Sorry to hear about the bereavement, Duncan. Hope all is well.
If you need some extra Speights, I'm sure Tim is most willing to have a few drinks to ease your mind. :)

Thanks Warren,
have got Tims cellphone number so going to try & catch up with him at some stage. Interesting to hear your camera needing "assesment" it's not as though the problem was intermittant - sounds like delaying tactics to me, give them stick...

Looks like we have got a bit of interest....
So why don't we meet up at my place after lunch, say 1pm. Then we can car pool and head off to an undecided location to shoot for 3 or 4 hours. Then back for a swim, bbq, and a few drinkies.
BYO meat, drinks and a salad or desert. Families etc are welcome to join us for the swim/bbq/drinks. (Hey they can come to the photo shoot too if they want!)
The pool was 29 degrees yesterday afternoon so it should easily make 30 by next weekend as long as it doesn't rain all week!
Address is 26 Finnerty Ave, Howick.
Happy New Year everyone.

Sounds good Scott,
hopefully we can head back to akl on Friday so will be there for sat. Dunno about taking photo's though, yesterday did some serious munting of the sensor so will have to drop it into Canon (ugh!) to get them to have a looksee. Might be a good time to pick up a second body I think...

Well I'm either looking at getting 1D Mk III replacement, or a 2nd 20D.
And instead of a Canon 100-400L, I'll probably get a Sigma 120-300 2.8. The sharpest telephoto fixed 2.8 lens there is! It's more expensive, very heavy, no IS, but a beast. And 2x extender works well for 240-600 and f5.6

Wazza it tock canon 5 weeks to fix the sensor on my camera, they used every excuse under the book, the tech was in training, he was on holiday, they were waiting on parts, it went on and on. i'm still waiting for my grip to come back, it's been hearly three months. Canon NZ service sucks. On the other hand my cousin has a D70s it had a stuffed sensor, T.A. McAllister (Nikon agent) fixed in in 4 days.
I've got the phone number for the service manager Paul Brill if you want it, give him heaps, he's south african so not to bright.

Before you plunk down the readies for the Sigma I suggest you have a good search on the FM forum. I've looked really hard at this lens and would like one but a bucket load of people have had problems with them.

You should all know me by now. I'm way too undecided. That's one of the benefits of being young.
Anyway, good to see you around Rob. Must have been hiding? ;)
My current plan is... There's no way I can make England this year. Haven't got money.
I really want to travel to Wanaka for the Warbirds in Easter, however getting there, and back is an expense. Then I remembered it was now my dream to spend more time in the South Island.. making working a temp job, in tourism, or even photography related somewhere.. How about the photographer/videographer for AJ Hackett Bungy? :p
Well anyway, I thought that sounded feasible.. My holiday pay cashed in from leaving work, approx 25 days owing come April, I can get 7 weeks pay, minus lots of tax, and should be able to afford this 120-300 lens.
I was also considering the Sigma 300-800... But I would be selling a few things. Perhaps even my sister.
MattL

I'd buy that!
Also, I would be intersted in the trip to wanaka for easter too - We can basically half the cost of travelling if we go together.

My take: Do the cool stuff like that while you can! After you buy a house and have a family it becomes quite hard to just up and go and do something different.
The issue with that is, that most people are not really earning the real $$$ until they have the family etc

Nah, it happens in stages, first the "You can still buy your toys stage", then the saving for something stage, i.e. no toys, then the 'no money for toys stage', but if you behave you still can have toys from time to time, helps if she has an expensive hobby too.
I doubt you will ever have to sell it all though!

Well, I was casting off Musik point from 11.30 till 5.30 today.
about mid-day, I hooked something massive. It spooled out half of my line before it snapped. I was lucky not to loose my rod! That must have been a shark or something.
But I never caught anything :-(
I might go bring one of our boats back from the batch, and try goin a little further offshore.

Does anyone have a ultra wide 10-22 /12-24 lens that I could test. I have had the use of a 16-35mm and its not quite wide enough.
Before I spend I would like to test. Looking at the sigma range reviews are not to bad 10-20 /12-24.
It would be used for landscape/beach/waterfall shoots.
TIA
PS reviews would point to the Canon EF-S 10-22mm as the best

17-40 collecting dust due to a 16-35.
I didnt notice a great deal of difference during the day with the 2 lens.
Personally I think my choice would be a 24-70 F2.8.
I found that 35-40 end is to limiting and 16-17 is not wide enough
Toying with 10-22 18-85 both EF-S
Need to make some money before I can justify "L" glass
PS I just about looked at selling my 20D and getting a 5D today I was going to give you first offer
you can still make an offer :) Then it dawned on me that I dont own the 16-35 or the 17-40 and my 18-55 wouldnt fit on the 5D

Haha clever one. Well I'm not making any purchases until March / April
I will pay cash for Sigma 120-300, and may look at getting 2nd body.
If I get my 20D back, and maybe a full replacement, might give me incentive to sell it, mint, $2200, or full cash back say, $2500.. and then put it towards 1D Mk II N, $6800 or whatever they are. Or two 20Ds.
I really like the 1.6x crop.

Well they first said it would be about a 10 day wait. Ok fine.
Several days later, before 10 days I phoned just out of interest. How is it going? Coz after reading CGA, I can get my choice of full refund, replacement, or fix.. Or even take it to a repairer of my choice, and charge them. Well they said that can't be done, until it's determined it's a fault of camera, and not my wrong doing.
So that was the week up to Christmas, and they said as soon as they know, they'll contact me ASAP. Now it's 4th Jan, and not one contact. 3 weeks +
I may get my dad to ring, he's a bit firmer. I've gone too relaxed after being in customer service for so long.
I was thinking of emailing them,
Finishing off with

I need to spend some money on glass. But with so many choices. Hong Kong dealers can save me a lot but what if I get a dud.
Do I go for canon, sigma, or tamron. At least with my 50-500 Im happy, mind you I did spend a lot of time humming and harring over that as well.
So I have telephoto covered now for ultra wide /wide and then of cause there will be the gap in the middle. Ah thats easy 24-70 F2.8L now to find the $2k +

It would be helpful for a nice LCD monitor too. Carrying my 19" around would be way to bulky. Perhaps a 29" LCD TV, with straight digital connection. My uncle has a 32" widescreen, and it looks FANTASTIC. Never seen a computer screen so sharp and clear.

Wazza and Duncan you both know how to get hold of me should you require use of the 3 gold rings (prefer gold to red). I love the 10-20mm and the 24-70 is SHARP very sharp.
So I think im done spending.... still need a macro, better get wife new car first or I will be looking for new wife.

I know that there are people that have "L" glass that I wanted but couldnt afford, and like most of us its always better on our camera shooting what we want. Thats what I hate about shop store and trademe.
Yes I just want to take this for the day and test before I buy is that ok with you?
Im sure if they said yes their sales might go up.

What you dont have kids Moppie, ah you dont know what your missing. No more money, sleep ins, time to yourself and of course that slim wife that you married (kids are not good for the wifes figure)
Kids are great if I had my time over again I would have had them when I was 16 as they would have left home by now:lol:
Maybe thats my calling in life a child portrait photographer.

So tomorrow's off? That's ok. Perhaps I'll have my camera by next week.
I still wouldn't mind going to the drags, but with no camera, it really sucks. I'm really considering two bodies, but that would mean I would have $12,000 worth of gear, that I really need to start earning money from photos to actually make it worthwhile. Money shoud go into lens anyway, as they last 3+ generations of cameras. Just look at the 6-7 year old 100-400L, and others which will last as long as you need, such as 17-40. That's what is holding me back.. Knowing it won't last too long. I may go with current 20D for a few months more, wait for the replacement, buy that, but keep existing 20D as backup. :)
I'm hoping new one is at least 11 megapixels.. I need big prints. :D

Yes some are lucky kids have no effect, others get some benifits after kids and others are so busy being mothers that the forget about themselves.
The beauty really comes when you see your wife in a new light as she proects and looks after your childrean. The case the other day at Bethells when a boy fell in to the surf and the mother jumps in after him.
Its a good thing that we men also mature past the wanting a playboy to wanting a woman who will love us no matter who we are.
The reverse is also true for wives. they married these firm fit men, years pass and hubby grows a belly and his own set of breasts.

From left to right:
My EOS 500 with Wazza's 580EX and Sigma 70-300 on it.
Duncans EOS 500 (yes that's right 2 film cameras on this outing) joined to his 100-400L.
Pete's 70-200 f.28L, My 18-55 Kit Lens, Wazza's (I think) 50 f1.8.
My 350D with Grip (Yes a digital!) with my 420EX and Weka's Bigma attached. Wazza and Pete's XS drives in front.
Weka's Sigma 24-70 f2.8, My EFS 60 Macro, and 2 strange image storage devices (still tring to find the right type of usb cable to download the images!)
Duncan's 24-70 f2.8L, Weka's 20D with 580EX and Sigma 10-20 attached.
Duncan's 16-35 f2.8L, The 28-80 USM off my EOS 500.
My 55-200 USM, Wazza's 17-40L.
Pete's 20D with 28-105 attached (Yes 2 20D's in one place, and they are both working!)
Unfortunately Duncan and Wazza's 20Ds could not join us, as they are both broken!
