View Full Version : Cracked Neopan negs?

A few days ago I dropped of a roll of Neopan 400 (35mm) and got it back rather quick. But after looking at the negs I noticed in one of the 4 frame cuts like around frame 26 (I think) the negs are cracked in more then 1 place right along the sprocket holes and almost right into the frame it self!

I am wondering if they did it. I dropped it off at a fuji kiosk at a grocery store. Thinking, yeah... its Fuji film going to a fuji lab. No problem then I see this!? Could they have done it? Im not sure if they have a machine to do this or if its done by hand. I know the film is really thin.

But I also wonder maybe it was my OM-1 that did the damage, but being in the middle of the roll, would it have messed up while I was winding the film back up? But if it was damaged in the camera, would it have actualy jamed while I was trying to get it out or while I was shooting pics?

Anyone have problems with cracked negs?

could be the camera...maybe you wound it to fast and hard....the lab also could have done it too.....but a quick fix is this.......
soak the negs in distilled water for about 15 minutes...room temp is ok.....
then mix a solution of 20% glycerine.....
20 parts glycerine/80 parts distilled water......soak the film in there for another 20 minutes.......hang dry......this should soften the emulsion and you should be ok.....

to answer your question about anyone having this problem.....not anymore....not with digital.........don

...but a quick fix is this....... The cracks don't reach into the frame, so why do that? You'll probably pick up dust from the air & just cause more problems.

Was there any misregister on any of the shots within a frame or two of the torn sprockets? In any case, shredded sprocket holes are more likely to be caused by something in the camera than by the processor. Possibly you accidentally (and I know, it isn't easy on the OM-1) partially slipped the "rewind" latch, either while advancing or rewinding the film.

Photoguy....

I'm just assuming that he has a clean environment....afterall....that should be a given and not have to be explained...but you may be right......at any rate...a bathroom should be dustless enuff........my darkroom is as dustproof as it could get...filtered air etc.....but that's just me and not everyone.....I stand almost corrected.....don

It may have been my camera. It is an old camera, got it used off ebay. I recently got a like-new Elan 7N that is loaded with tri-X 400 right now.

It don't look like shredded sprocket holes just cracked. I will try to scan the neg in a little bit on my flatbed as an example.

They are not very important pics, just something I was testing out that was loaded in the camera when I got my Elan 7N
