Just before Christmas, I was attempting to take a picture of a Christmas bulb, which has a mirror surface. However, since the bulb is round, I couldn't take a photo of it without being in the reflection. As far as I can think, it might be impossible. Am I wrong? How would it be done?

in the studio, professionals usually use a light tent which has a small opening for the camera lens which reduces reflections to as minimal as possible.

in your situation, you could try to fashion something similar, put something white between you and the tree and cut a hole in it the size of your lens.

White is usually more pleasant in the reflection. Not always but most of the time (IMO). Since you can't get rid of all reflections it's best to use a nice neutral color that won't make it look like its got specks all over it.

Never tried it myself, but how about a long zoom and staying far from the reflective material.
