OK.. I should know this. Using my 550ex and 10D, I use the my lumiquest flash bouncer and adjust flash compensation on the flash by about +one stop. I've use it only once so far.
Should the 550ex still be able to do it's E-TTL thing and give me correct exposures as I move into different shooting situations/distances? On my Olympus E10 and F-40 I would have to adjust the compensation for the distance I was from the subject...like it was manual.

Any experience here?

ETTL ought to compensate automatically, as it is based on the flash light actually reaching the lens.

E-TTL will usually work as long as the camera is in program mode and you don't focus and then recompose. It gets trickier when you move to Av or Tv.
