Haven't posted here for a little while - been extremely busy over the holidays as we run a small hotel, and I have been busy selling some of my work - yay!!

Here is another Junkanoo photo - our version of carnival or mardi gras in the Bahamas.

The colors are amazing but I wish it was bigger.

Make it 100kb and 800pixels on the long side, use Save For Web feature in PS.

Thanks for the tip Maureen, I've been frustrated by the way Photobucket resizes my images. It worked!!
Wayne, believe it or not, I wouldn't mind a change of scene!! But you can keep the temperatures!! :D

Thanks Marie - actually the parade starts at about midnight and goes on until 8-9am! After each group passes they go to a rest area to recuperate for the next round (they make two circuits of downtown Nassau) and it's so cute to see little kids who are participating curled up on mom or dad's lap, with parents snoozing as well!

why is the parade so late and for so long ?
am wondering why not early evening

the nearest to it over in these islands is Notting Hill (in London )
but it is never during the night
of course the weather is slightly different , but it does not stop the full colour costumes and huge crowds

Marie, the history behind Junkanoo is that it evolved out of celebrations at Christmas and New years that the slaves held, derived from African traditions - the only free time they had was at night. The name Junkanoo is thought to have come from the name of a slave who was very instrumental in the early junkanoo parades - his name was Johnny Canoe.

It's just I thought the girl looked very tired

She probably was tired - by the time her group passed me they had already put on an incredibly energetic show on Bay Street, then they come around the corner and have to do the same thing on Shirley Street, where I was standing. The noise from the cowbells, brass section and drums is incredible, and I have no doubt that many of the participants don't get a lot of sleep during the last few days before the parade, putting finishing touches on their costumes. Fortunately the temperature that night was in the high 60's, so it wasn't too hot.
Here's a "behind the scenes" shot - although she's smiling the lady sitting on the curb said she was exhausted, and behind her you can see the legs of a couple of youngsters who were flat out asleep! In an hour or so they would be back on the parade dancing their hearts out! This was taken with my Fuji as I was walking home, hence the not too sharp image!

I didn't get to see this one when it first came up- glad it's back. Wonderful colours! Great job on focusing in close- you get the detail without any other distractions.
