I dunno either but for several days under his name it said "Banned from the forums"! But now it's back to "Cream of the crop" so I'm thinking he might now be on vacation or something. Anyway, I hope to hear that everything is ok with him. I always enjoy what he writes.

It might be that after he was banned he didn't want to return. I could see him being that type, he seemed somewhat haughty in my limitted dealings with him.

Please trust me when I tell you that suspending or banning members is something we do only after we've exhausted every other possible remedy. This usually involves a great deal of private messaging between the member, moderators, and administrators. Most often, this is sufficient to correct behaviors that we consider detrimental to the board.
Our goal is not to shame or embarrass the member, and we will always try to resolve issues privately before resorting to more desperate actions, and that almost always works. Sometimes, however, we encounter a member, sometimes an old friend, who feels they are somehow empowered to ignore forum rules despite our requests. When that happens, we have no choice but to use the tools at our disposal.
Please have faith in your moderators and administrators. They work very hard to keep the forum the helpful, informative, friendly place it has always been. All we ask in return is your faith that what we do is ultimately for the good of the forum.
Thanks.

To the Mods - keep it up, you're doing a great job IMHO.
Speaking personally, I have danced on the edge once or twice but the Mods do a great job of steering things back on course. The only thing I ask is that they realize that we might be in a certain state of mind and may need a little time to bring ourselves back to center. I think they do that very well.
I'm no wide traveler of online forums, but this is one of the friendliest I have seen and one of the main reasons it is my 'home' for photography discussions.
All of which is one man's opinion.
Have Fun,

Once you get a certain amount of posts under your belt, you are bound to step over the line in some respect or other - just by the law of averages.
I have been pulled up and excepted my errors of judgement. The mods work for the greater good and the board moves on.
It is regrettable to lose a member who helped so much. If he still gets to read this, please come back.

I'm not afraid to admit I've been pulled over by the POTN cops on more than one occasion. Sometimes I get a bit cheeky and it comes out on here. All in all I'd say it's one of the better forums for photography. Not only was Pekka intelligent enough to use an established and recognizable forum software rather than some obscure or self-coded board that would probably be difficult to navigate and less feature-rich, he has selected moderators that are discrete enough to tell you in a PM that you stepped over the line rather than make a deal of it in a thread.
I also like that it's a Canon-only forum. Not that I hate the dark side, but rather it eliminates the brand wars that are so annoyingly prevalent in a lot of other forums.

I don't know what happened that caused strife, we all have our bad days/weeks etc.
I actually found myself thinking the same thing just last week - Where is Bob?
Did a bit of a search, found his last post a few weeks back and figured he was having a break, as we all do from time to time.
It is a shame to hear that he may not be posting here much in the future. I for one was a great fan of his somewhat dry humour which tied in nicely with some fantastic knowledge.
Bob, if you are viewing this post, your input and character are missed. If you do choose not to return, best wishes anyway :)

I am sorry but when you ban people you pretty much build a wall for them returning that they are not willing to climb over. That is part of the process of being a moderator and living with the consequences of banning people.
I have been a member of a forum where people get banned all the time for voicing their opinions or "publicly attacking" a moderator. Doesn't matter who is right or wrong, they still get banned. As a result that forum has lost some good members and very few who do get banned return.

Getting banned is also a consequence of one's actions. After multiple attempts to get someone to change their behavior fails, banning is done as a last resort and the poster is aware that it is is coming. We do not surprise people with it.

Gitzo is alive and well, grazing outside Tom's hotel in the Bay area as I write this. (Why do you think that Tom drives a truck? Donkeys don't fit in Beemers very well.)
The little guy spends the cold, bitter, Canadian winter months down South and then returns to his true home in the late spring. In fact, he should be here within the month. He is getting on in age and cannot carry the same load as in his younger years. (Why do you think I'm selling the 300 f/4? Just trying to make his burden lighter.) When I got rid of the Aztek last fall I had a heck of a time trying to find a donkey approved transporter but finally got an Xtrail. He loved it. I miss the little guy and cannot wait for his return. Somewhere I have a picture of him before he left on his vacation. I'll dig it up and post it.

Bob Gross was very good at birds and sundry animal ID's. That's missed.
Now that we are talking about banishment and forum rules..... risking a banishment here myself courtesy of my copatriot IanD, I must say that those obligatory new lens baptism shots of ducks need to go from the Nature forum ! They may be OK on the Lens Forum...I do not care about that. However, the bar needs to be raised for the bird shooters and their new lenses. That's why I suggest, nay, I respectfully request the unwritten rule be changed on the Nature Forum so that the only acceptable new lens baptism shots are those of the tree sharks. If there are no tree sharks in the photog's area, then a comparable animal should do such as the Tasmanian Devil and such.
I thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

We got tree sharks here up the ying yang. Damn things are addicted to poutine and just hang around on low branchs waiting for some poor unsuspecting soul to walk by. They are rather chubby with little fins they use as legs. Their "kill" ratio ain't very high cause they just sort of fall off the branch instead of springing gracefully, but they sure as heck get full points for tryin.

Ian, I think you're talking about the wrong kind of tree sharks. You're talking about the kind that descended from the pair that was swept out of the ocean by a huge hurricane and tossed about up in the atmosphere for weeks before they finally rained down in Montreal and landed on the pine trees there to start a new lineage of tree sharks.
I think the tree sharks referred to in this thread are those that descended from the first sharks that set fin on land a couple of millions years ago. Their fins eventually evolved to have little shark tooth claws to make tree climbing easier. Of course, that resulted in their loosing their endless rows of shark teeth in their mouths so they can't rip off chunks of flesh off their prey like their seaborne cousins can. They more than make up for that now, though, by being able to stuff many chunks of morsels in their cheeks. Their sandpaper scales have turned soft and furry as have their tails. They, however, did manage to retain their original grayish or brownish color, though.

Sorry, but the possible coloration of ducks simply blows away tree sharks when showing off a new lens. Geese would be better than tree sharks. At least geese have 2 "colors."
Tree Sharks are also, well, tree sharks.

Did you ever notice that poutine has the letters POTN in the proper order? Hmmmmmm.
I went to a CompUSA store today to inquire into buying more memory for my laptop. The fellow that waited on me smelled like tomato soup. It did not make me hungry, and actually killed my fondness for it. He also didn't believe that I actually knew the model number of my laptop, and refused to sell me the memory unless I brought the computer in.
I wonder if tree sharks eat tomato soup.
