I just got a canon 20D and I've been enjoying it immensely ..well, untill I discovered how to change the format to RAW. I've tried to download my images (which are only in RAW format) and my computer says that I've got no images on my camera. (but I do) I have photoshop elements 2 on my computer at the moment. Do I have the right software? what am I doing wrong?
(I'm apololgizing up front if there is a thread on this already and would appreciate a link if there is one :) )

Does PE2 have a RAW converter? I think that facility begins with PE3. Anyhow, I suggest checking out Pixmantec's Rawshooter program if all your work is shot RAW. Rawshooter Essentials is highly acclaimed in its versatility and what's more it is a free download!! :-D

Try to Digital Photo Professional software that came with your camera. It can handle RAW even if Elements 2.0 can't.

Did you ever figure out what you needed? I am having the same problem. I just upgraded from 10D to 20D and I have shot in both RAW and JPEG. I can download the JPEGS, but I get the same error message when downloading the RAW files. I have installed the new 20D software. I use a card reader and have never had trouble downloading RAW images from the 10D. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! JT

The advice to get RSE is certainly good advice, but won't resolve any download issues. Everything that you need is included in the software and cable that came with the camera. Even better, is to use a card reader and browse to the card's contents via explorer, and copy the the files to your HDD. Personally, I have CS2, and and use Bridge to copy and rename the files in shot. You should be able to do this with Canon's ZoomBrowser just as well. Exactly what are you doing and what is the error?

I get a "no images on camera or memory card that match download conditions" when I use my card reader. I never had problems downloading RAW images from the 10D. I can download JPEGS taken with the 20D, but not RAW files. I have set the camera to just shoot in RAW format with no JPEGS. I am perplexed! Do I need to somehow change download conditions? If so, how? I have read the Canon software manual, gone to the Canon site and tried to reserarch this error message, but have been unsuccessful. I hope someone else has had this same issue when upgrading to the 20D. Thank you for your interest!!!

What application is giving you that error?

What application is giving you that error?
The Zoombrower comes on the screen when I insert the card reader and I click on "start download". The error message appears after that.
I just did a test. I just took a RAW image with my 10D and it downloaded perfectly, so it is something specific to the 20D software I installed. I didn't uninstall any of the 10D hardware -- should I have?
I have always downloaded using the ZoomBrower and edited in CS2. This is a big mystery to me. It will read JPEGS, but not RAW files! Thanks for your help!

If you use explorer to browse to the drive letter assigned to your card reader, are the the files there? If so, then the issue is with Zoombrowser. There are updates available on the Canon website. I believe the current version is 5.5.

When I use the browse images, none appear. I can't even begin the download, so I know the pictures aren't anywhere. I checked the version of Zoombrower I have and it doesn't show any. I downloaded it in 2004, so maybe I should update just to be sure.
However, if I can download and browse RAW images from my 10D, it would seem it is a problem with settings in my camera or software issue with the 20D????

When you open My Computer, do you see a drive that represents your card reader?

Yes, and it shows there is info recorded. It just does not want to download RAW files, but will download JPEGS.

Going through the same exact problem, please let me know if you get it to work.
ZoomBrowser doesn't work even after re-installation. I got a free download of RSE, it didn't work. ReInstalled that one too, just get the error "No Raw Images Found". I tried opening my images in CS, from the camera, it worked the first time. Second image I got "incorrect path" or "root directory no found" something to that affect. The few times one of my programs recognized the RAW images I could never get thumbnails of th images (Maybe Normal??).
The only way I can RAW images from my CF card is if I open My Computer, Camera, and right click image and Send to My Pictures. From there I can only open it in CS. I don't have a card reader.
Kind of frustrating, would like to take more images in RAW. It's a 20 minute procedure using multiple programs just to open one image........an image that I can't see a thumbnail for until it's already downloaded.

Yes, and it shows there is info recorded. It just does not want to download RAW files, but will download JPEGS.Since you have CS2, there are two options: you can try to repair ZoomBrowser by going to the Canon website, and downloading and installing ALL the patches and updates for the software included with your 20D, or try something new, and more efficient.
Use Adobe Bridge to download and rename files from the card to your pc.
I put my card in the reader
open Bridge, browse to the drive for the card reader
preview and tag the keepers (Ctrl-8 labels them green)
filter for labeled images
select all (Ctrl-a), click Tolls>Batch Rename
fill out the dialog - make sure you select "Copy to other folder" and use the Browse button to specify where you're keeping them
click rename
browse to the folder you moved them to, and viola! your done.
It sounds like more work than ZoomBrowser, but it actually accomplishes a lot more, and gives you more flexibility in naming your files, which is something that gets important the more you shoot. Let us know how that works for you.

jfranco: Thank you so much for your help. I had to take a break after 3 hours of trying to figure this out. I went through your process and was able to see the pictures and copy them to a new folder. I am in CS2 and double click to work on them and I get the message "could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid jpeg marker type is found." I don't know why it automatically renames it with .JPEG.
So I have gone back in and typed .CR2 when batch renaming and they will open. This means I can't work on any pictures until I copy to a new folder and batch rename.
At least I can access my pictures for the meantime -- I really liked the way the 10D downloaded the images. I guess I will have to use a new one! Thanks again for your patience. Joanna

In Bridge, there is a preview of what the renamed file will be, make sure the CR2 extension is still indicated. Do you think Zoombrowser changed the extensions? Weird.

I also had problems retrieving RAW images from the 20D. I use the USB cable and Windows Explorer to tranfer images off the camera. It would never show .CR2 files. DPP could not see them either via the cable. I downloaded RSE and it could not see them either. Then I noticed on my desktop a program that came with the camera-"EOS Viewer Utility". Had never used it- I had no problems with jgegs with other programs. So I started that program and plugged in the camera and "POOF"......CR2 files all over the place! Once they were on the hard disk, both DPP and RSE could see them. Hope this helps someone else. BTW- RSE rocks!

With a 20D, the only way to see .CR2 files using the cable without Canon software is to shoot RAW only, set the camera to PTP mode, and use a compatible operating system such as Windows XP.
I find it far easier to forget about all this messing around and use a card reader.

A card reader is the way to go. I've never had a problem grabbing CR2 files using the card reader--it's just a drive with files & doens't care what they are. For downloading I prefer to use Downloader Pro, it automates most of the initial work.

Thanks for the heads up, I will try that later.
Everyone mentions the file extention as"CR2"........mine are CRW. What's the difference?

.CRW are RAW files in older Canon cameras, .CR2 are RAW files in newer Canon cameras.

Excited about the File Viewer Utility option that was mentioned, ran home to grab my laptop. Sure enough I have the program, pluged in the camera and nothing. The camera doesn't show as a folder or as drive. I can go to My Computer and see the pictures, well the files (it won't display thums)
RSE says there are no raw files on the camera
File Utility doesn't recognize a camera  .
Photoshop CS I can open the camera and see a list of images........again no thumbnails.
I can open one image, just one. I try to open another image and;
0001\root\CRW_3082.bmp
Path Does not exist
Please verify the correct path was given.
This is so frustrating......... seriously I don't get it. All this hassle to adjust white balance? I can manipluate exposure in Elements with levels.
Going back to JPEG

Thanks I saw your post earlier.
I suspect the only way to view/download RAW is to purchase a card reader, and that just stinks.

That isn't true, I have the same camera, and was able to without a card reader. It's just easier, safer, and better to use a $15 tool.
Check the camera's communication mode.
Be sure all the patches to Canon SW available today for the 300D are dowloaded and installed.

WINNAR!!!!!
It was on PTP for some reason, switched it up to normal and all is well  I just tried it with File Viewer Utility. RSE now lists the type of camera in the tree view, whereas before it just listed "camera". No images with RSE, but that might because I am currently in File Viewer. This is a start, so relieved.
Thanks, thanks and thanks again!
BTW- I didn't realize how affordable card readers were. I was thinking they were ~$50 or so.

Man I am siked! I can get the images with the File Utility, save them, then open them back up in RSE. I haven't figured out how to save or convert them in RSE yet...but I will learn.
I am hooked on RAW, the amount of adjustments and corrections I was able to do I could never do with JPEG........never. These adjustments made the image go from meh to WOW. RAW from here on out, no doubt.
Thanks again jfrancho you have been a tremendous help.
