A rare venture outside of the Sports Forum for me, be gentle please
I visited the museum a couple of years ago with some friends. It was the first time i'd ever used a DSLR and all of these were taken with my old 300D and the notorious 18-55 EF-S "kit" Lens. I don't think it's as bad as many say it is...

I love those places. Too bad that so many of them have the "No tripod" rule.

Am I reading "City of Winnepeg" on that Spitfire?
The engine on the floor is a RR Merlin, correct?
Very nice photos. I'd welcome more!

Good shots! I visited Duxford about 1974 -- shortly after it opened anyway -- it sure has progressed from being a draughty hangar in a field!! :-)

Your eyes do not decieve you, the Spitfire does carry the name "City of Winnipeg". There's a bit of history about the Squadron it came from here...

I would assume the engine is a Merlin, as it's displayed next to the Hurricane. If anyone knows better, shout up :)

The US Air Museum is excellent, and this coming summer the new "Airspace" exhibition will open, which is similar to the US Display, but contains mostly British / European Aircraft i believe. Concorde, the Vulcan and the Lancaster will move there and there will be aircraft hanging from the roof too.

It is definitely worth a second visit, Geoff! :-)

Thanks for the history link, Geoff. Interesting bit about the Lysanders. Seems they had in mind to make the Canadians into an observation squadron, or perhaps have them engage in a little cloak and dagger business for the S.O.E. flying into occupied Europe.
Is there a Lysander there at the museum?

There certainly is, although i don't think i managed to get a clean shot of it, quite a few of the planes were in pieces undergoing restoration work at the time, i'll take a look at the back-ups later :)
If you want more info on Duxford, then take a look at the Website..

I'm going back for the Airspace Day on May 21 and will definitely be there for the Spitfire 70th Anniversary show in September. The mass Spitfire Fly-past will be something special.

Duxford is always worth a visit! They have several aircraft undergoing restoration to both static and flying condition. Amongst those for restoration to flying condition are: The Blenheim (which suffered a wheels up landing a couple of years ago) and an Australian (IIRC) built Bristol Beaufighter (aka "Whispering Death") The Beau is at least 5 years (or so I was told) away from completion. As ever, it's all down to money with these things, but I would love to see the Beaufighter in the air!
