:D
This is quite an odd turn of events,..
90% of the shooting I do is with long lenses,.. I like the Wildlife :)
So It would have made more sense for me to spend the big bucks on Canon long lenses,...
But I have a small assemblage of lenses by Sigma that will have to do. $800.00 for a Sigma 50-500 Vs. $5,500.00 for a Canon 500mm!!!!!
So,. as a wide was not a hi prioruty,. I was really looking at the Sigmas there as well. $350.00 for a 17-35mm or $450.00 for the 15-30mm
But I came to my sense,..
$800.00 for Canon "L" glass in a range I have yet to fill.
Why not do this just once?
So ,. I am about to join the "L" Club,... //shivers//
Needless to say I am excited,.. I'll let you know how i make out. :D

CDS,
The picture of my dog Lobo you assited me to embed in my post was taken with my new Canon 17-40 which I also just purchased from B&H. I'm having lots of fun with it while my 2 Sigma lenses are out for upgrades so they are compatible with my 10D...which is taking a little longer than I had hoped. I originally had purchased the Sigma 15-30 without doing enough research and realized once it was in my hands that it will only accept rear gel filters where the Canon will accept rear gell as well as regularly front mounted filters and I wanted the ability to use the circular polarizer as well as the UV.
Have fun with your new lens...I think your going to like it!

Yeah,.. I put the 15-30mm on my 10D in the store and tried it on for size,..
The poics looked okay,. (but really in a flourescent lit store,. they weren't going to tell me much)
.. but that is how i found out just how odd the lenshood and cap assembly is!
All they needed to do was thread that ring for the lens cap and you'd have both front and rear filter options,.. in fact I contemplated buuying iot doing exactly that myself,.. With the 1.6 X crop of the digitals CMOS I doubt that vignetting would be an issue (never work on a real 35mm though)
... but even modified for a front filter it would be an awkward lens.
That narrowed it down to the 17-35mm Sigma or the Canon 17-40mm for me.
Anyway,. I am looking forward to the Canon lens!

Welcome to the 'L' club.
Give your wallet a freindly tap, you'll never want a non-L lens again ;)

Welcome, you will find that the EF 17-40/4L produces fine on the 10D. You will have great fun. However, i still miss super W.A. And when i do, i just mount the EF 17-40/4L on my EOS 1n and get a whopping 17mm.

Ps. you dont even want to compare the Sigma 50-500 with an EF 500/4L. They are not even in the same ballpark.. ;)

When I got my 10D the 18mm/3.5 Sigma just did not work, I had hoped....
So I went a tested the Sigma 15-30mm and 17-35mm lenses, set at f4 and 30mm, against my well used 28-70mm/2.8L.
Even on the 10D screen I thought I could see the differences and on the PC there was no competition.
The sharpness on the Sigmas was lacking, the contrast was well away from the Canon and colour balance varied, not only against the Canon but from one Sigma to another!
I ordered a 16-35mm/2.8L, the 17-40mm/4L had just been announced and was not avaiable in the UK then but after trying one since I would have bought one if they had been in the stores - and saved some money too...
I don't regret buying the 16-35mm/2.8L though.

Haha I know,.. :)
The only comparison I could make would be as to the % chance of my ever owning one. In the case of the Sigma it was about 90% (100% now) in the case of the 500 L ?
,,, maybe a 0.000023% chance,.. Lottery or inheritance :)
I have seen the quality difference side by side in the feild. While I was trying to photograph the Eagles Nest in my gallery with the Sigma,. a woman arrived with the Ninkon 500 f/4 with the Nikon 2X teleconverter.
Okay so not the "L" IS,.. but the Nikon IS in the same Ballpark!
Wow,.. it was sooo much clearer and the autofocus was instantaneous and smooth. It was the only time i've ever looked through $5,000.00 worth of glass!
... oh how I'd wished she was a Canon owner,.. I think I may have convinced her to let me put my 10D on that lens..... :D :D (she was actually using FILM! ) :D :D

Interestingly, no one mention the Tokina lenses.
There is rather cheap 17mm/f3.5 AT-X Pro lens for EOS systems at Adorama.
What do you say about this lens as a substitute for otherwise expensive zooms.

I have also been bitten by the "L" bug....I have had the 17-40 L 4.0 for several weeks now on my 10 D and its a very good lens...I just received my newest "L" lens, the 70-200 4.0 L., and it also is a great lens for the 10 D...These 2 lenses should cover most of my shooting situations.

Well,.. BUMMER!
B&H now has me REALLY MAD! :(
I ordered this lens among other things on Wednesday. I paid extra for FedEx shipping so I would have it today (Friday)
I worked all day Thursday 7:30am - 2:00am this morning.
B&H HAs both home and work numbers AND my home machine clearly indicated that I was at work and leaves the work forwarding number.
This morning when I awoke I find that B&H called my HOME number Thursday,. the day the lens was supposed to ship,.. and asked that I call and confirm the porder!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have an account with them online that requires a password,. and i used the same card I have allways used with that account!!!!!
To top it off when I expressed my disappointment that I would now NOT be reciveing the lens untill Monday at the earliest,. the guy "offered" to upgrade the shipping AT MY OWN COST!!!!!
An upgrsde that by the way would still only guarantee shipping as soon as monday!
"please pay us an extra twenty bucks on TOP of the order for over a grand to expedite the shipping so we can guarantee you will get your lens 3 days AFTER the day that you allready payed extra to recieve it by"
AAAAaaargh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway,. I "Guarantee" I won't receive the Lens on Monday either,. I bet it will be Tuesday,. as He won't even ship till monday now (because I wouldn'e pay more!)

That is unfortunate. I ordered the 17-40 on Wednesday (6/18) around 3 pm for overnight express delivery and it arrived around 10:15 am the next day. I have had absolutely no issues with B&H. I have even missed their shipping deadline by a couple of hours and have always managed to get the product when it was promised. B&H will have my business forever!!

That is a bummer. I have always had quick shipping by B&H. I ordered my 17-40 on a Tuesday and it arrived that Friday and I had it shipped Fed Ex Saver.
I have had enough good experiences with B&H on returns and modifying orders that even if I find an item slightly less expensive somewhere else I find myself still buying it from B&H.
