I am getting my 580EX in a few days and was wondering how other people mount their 580 when using it as a stuio light on a stand etc I'd also like to know how other people are attaching an umbrella and softbox to the stand with teh 580EX.... I'm making my own stand that I think will work OK but I'll wait to the flash unit first.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I have three 580 flashes and they all come with a mini stand for sitting on a table, or they can mount to a tripod using shoe mounts. I don't use them as studio lights but if you need to do so I would mount them on any light stand or tripod in the same fashion as studio lights are. Naturally you will need a slave if not communicating between multiple 580's. Aderama Camera sells nice shoe mounts that are made especially for this that will also mount an umbrella. Just do a Google search for flash mounts or search Amazon. I think I paid about $20.00 each for mine but you might need light stands. One thing good is light stands are much cheaper than tripods as you can pick up two forabout $70.00 also from Aderama.

You can get a piece of plastic for 20 bucks which has a female hole at the bottom and the hot shoe at the top.

I thought it was overpriced, so I'm using cameras as these adapters. Funny thing is that funtional cameras cost less than the plastic adapter described above.

I have a choice of three mounting devices: Zeiss Ikon, Soviet Zenit and Canon Canonet. All of them funtional and cheaper than 20 bucks.

The stands that come with the flashes also have a threaded hole in the bottom so can be attached directly to any tripod.

The stand on the bottom of the 580EX... that's excellent, I didn't know that

I just got mine today but I didn't get a stand with the tripod thread on it... did I get ripped off somehow?

Are you sure you didn't get the stand? It's slipped into a pocket in the back of the pouch that should also have been in the box.

Photoflex Shoe Mount Multiclamp with Umbrella Holder for Mounting Small Flashes to Light Stands (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009UT18/sr=1-15/qid=1136495215/ref=sr_1_15/103-2587184-0928603?%5Fencoding=UTF8)

I have a different one but came across this when looking for a light stand. I bought one from ehay for about $12 shipped. I thought I could unscrew the ball head on my tripod and mount it on but I was wrong... again. Now I need a light stand.

Can anyone link me to a good and tested hot shoe slave w/ pc sync outlet for the 550ex? I'm low on funds...
