Newbie here that just got a Rebel XT for Christmas and of course Maggie (my boxer) is one of my fav subjects! I took this one of her a few minutes ago as I couldn't resist. I didn't bother digging out the tripod...I'm thinking it would have been sharper had I done so? Any tips/critique are welcome as I will be torturing Maggie on many more occassions in search of that perfect pic! It was taken at 1/4s, f/5.6, ISO 200, 55mm with the kit lense.

Cute dog. I would try to crop out a bit of, or mute somehow the light pillow in the foreground... Unfotunately, I'm as new to the camera and accompanying processes as you and can't actually do it for you.

...yet!!

Kick up the shutter or use the tripod if you want it sharper. You shouldn't handhold, as a rule, below 1/60. Other than a little softness, it's a really cute pic of your dog. My dog can relate totally!

Cute picture and the suggestions given above by Liza will give you the shot you want. It is a lot of trouble to get the tripod out, but without using a flash it is difficult to hold the camera still enough. Better yet set the f-stop at f8, synch to flash on a tripod.

Thanks all for comments and suggestions. Yes, I'm sure many dogs out there are the victims, I mean models, for many photographers! They are such great subjects!
