Shot with just a basic 18-55mm lens on a 300D it was just turning dark when i got this shot

Good composition but it is underexposed. You should be able to lighten the cows so they show up better.

Thanks dancinec it shows up pretty well on my monitor maybe mine is brighter(TFT) but i took your advice but i seemed to have lost the sky :( http://www.wide-eye-media.co.uk/moo9.jpg

Way too dark on my monitor. The second one is slighly better but still too dark and yes..the sky is blown. What could be done with the original image ( where all the data is) , especially if it is a raw image is to adjust exposure while still raw, convert to Tiff or Jpeg, remove shadows and sharpen slightly. I see you have image editing allowed so this is what i mean ( but like I said the original file would work out better).
Photoshop CS 2 used. Shadows removed by approx 40% and higlites darkened by approx 10 %. Auto contrasted and approx 30 percent sharpenning of luminance and detail channel ( color not sharpened to avoid halo effect). This preserves the sky and brings the subject out of the shadows. Hope you like!

Thanks for the adjustments, I looked at your image on a normal CRT monitor and it looks great compared too on my TFT and my first image looks well dark on this monitor

That is what I would have done also. Remember you don't want to move the exposure slider, but look under "shadows and highlights". Nice adjustment Gary.
