View Full Version : Kaesemann vs MRC filters & Slim vs Regular

Hi, I did a few searches on this, but it seemed the thread I found dwindled without really answering the question. I understand that the Kaesemann polarising filter is more "rugged" than the MRC; ie it is "edge-sealed". Do you think it's worth the extra $$? Is it something you think I would need living in Florida (humidity) and with general travel photography? Or is it meant more for people who are getting out there and getting really wet and dirty?

The second half of my question relates to whether to get the slim or regular type? I intend to use the filter on both my Tokina 12-24 and Canon 70-200. I've heard that I might need the thin with an ultra wide angle, but would love to know if it's been trialed on an actual Tokina. Am I right in saying that the thin version of either the Kaesemann and the MRC have the "slip on" lens cap instead of the ability to use your normal clip on cap? If I can avoid getting the thin, it would be much better and cheaper!

Oops, I thought of a third question! I'm still figuring out what a lot of this stuff means... is it possible to purchase a lens mount (not sure if right terminology) to hold a 77mm filter over my 18-55?

Opinions and info greatly appreciated, as I need to make this purchase tomorrow. Thanks

In my opinion, the Kaesemann filters are overkill for regular use. Plenty use the standard B+W/Hoya filters without issue in hot and humid environments. If going into extreme environments (eg, sub zero, rain etc) then it may be warranted.
I would go slim filters for such a wide angle lens - but that's just my guess, - not from personal experience. I have a B+W MRC slim filter in case I get a ultra wide angle lens later.
Re your 3rd question - you are looking for a 'step up ring' which enables you to use a large filter over a lens with a smaller thread.

Thanks Music. You've possibly saved me some $$$. :) G'day to home. Hope it's not too hot in Melbourne.
