speedlite 420 ex

well i know their is another topic on this but ive emailed canon and they say all features of the flash work with the g3. i beleive even including the assest beam. here the email

You have to be careful with the replies you get from Canon's level 1 customer support. They don't always know what they're talking about. A few may but others don't.

Most functions of the 420EX do work with the G3 but NOT all of them work. That fact is even documented in the G3 manual. Unfortunately, the focus assist beam on the flash is one feature that DOES NOT work with the G3.

I emailed Canon too and got this response:

Dear John,

Thank you for contacting Canon product support.

The AF assist beam of a Speedlite flash will only operate if the camera
to which the flash is attached is not equipped with its own AF assist
beam. Because the G3 has its own AF assist beam, the AF assist beam of
the 420 EX will not operate when that flash is mounted on the camera. We
regret this inconvenience.
