You all may have seen the videos on the net by now, but you can drop Mentos into soda and create your own soda geyser. :D During some of my vacation down time, I got the 20D out, set it to .jpg large and had my son hold the cable shutter release button to capture the explosive coke eruption at 5 frames per second, lol. It's not much but figure I would share my experience.

Used my 70-200 f/2.8L from about 20 yards away... 1/3200 @ f/2.8 ISO 100 70mm

Silly stuff, but here it is...

During my initial googling on this, I actually came across a forum where folks were discussing this. Apparently a couple of guys tried gulping lots of soda and immediately swallowed some mentos.... they claimed that a lot of foamy soady "came back up", but who knows... lol, I sure wouldn't want to try it.

Yeah rocks, drop a whole package of the Mentos into the 2 liter bottle to get the full eruption. It is actually cool to see happen. Diet Coke is recommended because it has less sugar and supposedly less sticky. Make sure you try it where you aren't worried about having to clean up afterwards.

good luck!!

William, this is great! not sure what amazed me more, the geyser or your interpretive dance! Need to plug these into Imovie and make a clip! Would you give me permission to play with them??

IF anyone does this and gets good sequence shots like these (yes your dance is strongly encouraged!) I'd love to play with them PM me and I'll give you the email addy to send them to or tell me where you have them hosted.

LIke I should be doing something other than getting my courses ready.
ACDC--I'm lucky you aren't my student! or I hope you are not- what a surprise! I do enough interpretive dance in my lectures as it is. They don't need any more reason to laugh "with" me!! lol
I will be wary of all students bearing diet cokes from now on! ;)

haha, I suppose, just let me see your production first, lol.

I though the coke eruption might be quick... and I was surprised when it did go, but I suppose my jump backwards was a little more dramatic than needed... I just didn't want sticky diet coke spray all in my face :o

Have fun with 'em!

Oh my, I'm so sorry to hear this Bruce, sorry for your loss. Since you mentioned this, what exactly happened? (if you don't care to discuss, I apologize)

EDIT: Nevermind, the aspartame... sorry, I didn't realize you were the same poster previous. Again, sorry to hear of this.

Thanks! When I get back to my campus office I'll play a little. wish there were more shots! Avoiding going in to work as long as I can. Tomorrow is a shooting day for me but will have to make an appearance later in the week.

This is great! And exactly what I've been looking for in terms of a demonstration for my physical science class. We're studying chemical reactions, and this is perfect to illustrate the concept to the students. We were going to do Pop Rocks and Coke, but this is better. Thanks for the idea.
