Just after Christmas I tried shooting some action - jumping those very quick off road buggies with the 135L and the 20D.

In summary

1. Dusty, dusty and dusty. Very late afternoon fast changing light.

2. Fast. Most shots are lucky. To get them in the frame and/or in focus was difficult.

3. Ambulance chasing dept: I got "hit n run" twice by out of control RCs...

One of the other guys took this picture of me in my shooting spot.
It provides an idea of the scale of the buggies.

And the first shot just makes it all worth it!

Thx, I got filthy in the name of cool pix. Did I whinge about the dust already?

Anyway... here's more.

Good catches. I used to fly R/C with a Heathkit, so you know how long ago that was! I shot some boats last year (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=101101) & imagine that they were a lot more predictable than the cars were. ;)

I am planning on doing this this spring/summer with mine. I have a 4.6cc truck maybe a little bigger and I'm trying to think of some ways to capture it midair of a jump. I figured I could either use servo and try to follow it off the ramp or just get the distance, focus the truck and move to where I want and just multishot it while it's jumping and hope it's in focus. Any points, great shot really like the "no land" view on the first one.

Are these Nitro(gas) or electric, hard to tell from the pictures but they look electric.

and last 2, the best way to photograph this stuff is to focus in one spot and fire away. ANd you need a shutter spped of 1/500

AI Servo only -they are way too quick thru the viewfinder at this (close) range.

The only gas engine is the Kyosho truck that screams along in a flash and seemingly stirs more dust than a chopper. The smaller buggies are all electric.

Carzee, as others have said, that first shot really is awesome. Good job!

I don't have many good ones, but here's a couple of a Revo...

This was very nearly a catastrophe...

That's my bag, with what little equipment I have, that the truck is locked onto. Went just a little high and right, to my relief.

Its in the PP that this one got "better..." - It was over exp 1 stop and nearly all the shots are cropped from 3:2 down to 4:3

But for web purposes its a good shot.

I've been into RC things since I was a young kid. I've had em all. Helis, planes, cars, offroad, boats.. It's a cool but expensive hobby.. I love your pictures. We once took some cars to a bike track and jumped them.. Needless to day they didn't last long until bits started flying off..
