Providing you haven't modified the jpg file you can use this tab to see how you took the picture. The A20 camera adds a 'distance to subject' detail and notes the flash mode used whereas the A70 doesn't. Has anyone else noticed this problem. Does anyone have a better way to get the details?

I haven't installed any of CANON's software as I haven't seen any point. Can anyone tell me if you can get all the photo's details using any of their software? or any other software?

I emailed CANON but they wern't very helpful

The details you mention is called exif data. Your A70 should provide that data. The data can in fact be lsot as you say if editing the photo but only certain software will do this. Windows XP camera software erases this data even if rotating the photo. There are programs available that you can use that will not erase this data.

Try out this free program. It is likely the best freeware available and you will not lose data.

Thanks for that conk - I've downloaded it and I'll have a look tonight - but I'm wondering if you missed the point. I am well aware that we are talking exif data here. It's the fact that on the same computer an A20 jpg shows different data to an A70 that I am questioning. Specifically the A70 does not appear to record the flash mode nor the focussing distance. But canon wern't interested!

I'm curious to know what other people see on their machines with their camera's. For all I know every single canon camera might use the exif data differently and sometimes incorrectly. At least I think that the A70 has a buglet here.

P.S. Use of the display button shows all the data except 'distance to subject'

Just curious and likely doesn't mean anything but have you seen the displayed exif data with photos on pbase?
I know it at least displays if the flash is used or not. Maybe try uploading a photo and see what you get there. Check out a photo from my albums and you'll see what kind of info they display.
I believe you are correct about the A70 not providing the flash details as the information does in fact vary from camera to camera.

I installed irfanview - it's quite nice. I don't think it will replace paintshop pro - my preferred picture editor - but it's good. It confirmed that 'SubjectDistance' is missing from the A70's exif data and that 'flash' is reported in a non-meaningful way. I have re-contacted Canon to see if they can be a bit more helpful.

BTW - I use XP Pro SR1 and rotating an image using explorer corrupts rather than removes the exif data. The basic stuff like time taken etc are okay after a rotate but camera mode isn't!

I just came across this explanation of exif data if anyone's interested.

I like Paintshop pro for managing/editing my pics and have done for years. I got version 8 yesterday and it preserves the exif data (which 7 doesn't). So that's my recomendation. But everyone has their preferences. Thanks to conk for pointing the way.
