Hi All, I will probably spend a couple of weeks in Roseville, about 30 minutes from Sacramento. Do you know any good place to visit and for shooting some pics, and any good camera shop?
Thanks!

Oh well, maybe I should clarify that I'll rent a car, and I'll have at least one weekend and all the nights to go around... Therefore, nice places don't have to be right in Roseville... I guess there are things worth shooting pics, over there! Anyway, even advises on night life will be welcome! :D
Thanks
PS I just noticed this is my 300th post! congratulations to me!

Someone else would be better for Sacramento recommendations.
But lake Tahoe is about an hour away up interstate 80.
Absolutely gorgeous this time of year. And not that nuch snow at lake level. About 8'' of rain though :( .
If you do make it to Tahoe on a weekend contact me & I'll show you a few "fishin' holes".:D

The California state railroad museum is in downtown Sacramento, and has lots of unique train engines and restored train cars. It is in "Old Sacramento", which is an 1800's vintage gold rush town (not old by Roman standards, but old for California). Old Sacramento is next to the Sacramento river, which has some interest as well. The Delta King riverboat is there, and you sometimes see interesting boats on the river.
Sutters fort in downtown Sacramento (28th & L) is an interesting old fort from the gold rush days of the mid-1800's.
The surrounding area has old foothill towns like Nevada City, Placerville, etc, and also in the Sacramento valley there are some wildlife preserves (look up "Stone Lakes "), and waterways with lots of birds.
South of Sacramento along the river road is the town of Locke, which is the only remaining Chinese settlement from the railroad building days of the mid-1800's.
The Sierra Nevada mountains are full of places to photograph, with Lake Tahoe as Doug said being just about an hour or so from Roseville (in clear weather).
Unfortunately, we do not have any auto-grills on our freeways (autostradas).
When are you coming to the area? There are seasonal events as well.
I used to think we had some old places here until I visited Italy . . .
Oh, and Pardees Cameras on El Camino near Watt Ave is the only Canon camera store in the Sacramento area. They are a real camera store, with most equipment in stock and the people that work there are photographers, not stereo salesmen.

Thanks, Steven, for all this useful information!
I'm coming over from the 16th to the 25 of January, I believe. I'll know for sure within today.
And, I don't think I'm going to miss autogrills... I hate them! :)
With all this nice things to do, this travel seems much more interesting!
Thanks

I love the Sacramento area - you have San Francisco a short drive to the west, Lake Tahoe and Reno to the east (be VERY careful if you go there. Check the weather so that you don't get "trapped" in a snowstorm), and especially, Yosemite is a relatively short drive south. I visited for a week last spring:

Tiziano,
Let me know when your plans are set, and when you know what dates you may be free to explore the Sacramento area. Are you going to Roseville on business?
Will you only have evenings free, or are there days you have free as well?
I see from your galleries that you travel extensively, and have many photos that explore the local people and places from a photo-journalistic perspective. I am jealous of your night shots in Rome, as I was unable to get out for much night shooting when I was in Rome. Next time I visit Italy, I plan to spend at least a week in Rome, and a week in the country photographing old farm houses and such.

Hi Steven,
I am coming to California for business. I have just finalized the working schedule. I will stay in Cupertino in the week from the 16th of January, while I'll stay in Roseville the following week, from the 23rd, therefore I'll have for myself the week-end of the 21st and 22nd and most of the evenings. That's not much, but.... better then nothing! I was thinking of spending the weekend in the Sacramento area, because I have already explored extensively the bay area.
Thanks for your nice comments about my pictures, but I'm still very junior! About the night pictures in Rome, well, if you live in a place, it's much easier to pick the right time and weather for shooting, and to know which are the right corners! :D
And, yes, I have been travelling a bit, both for work and for holidays.. unfortunately, in most of my trips, I didn't have a camera at all, or just a small point and shot one. Now that I have been badly infected with the photographic desease, I am married and I just had my first daughter, therefore I have to cut my travelling.... Well, my fault for waking up so late!
Thanks!

If you are interested in Nature Photography, stop at the Vic Fazio Wildlife area off I-80 just before the causeway, it gets flooded every winter for the birds. If you really are interested in some good bird shots and possibly a river otter, bald eagle etc, drive over to Williams, there are severla National Wildlife Refuges just north of there.
Colusa NWR, Delevan NWR, Sacramento NWR, and Granzellas is a great place to get a deli sandwich, or eat a huge breakfast or dinner before going out into the field.

Steve got off to a great start with recommendations. I'll add a few more.
The former McClellan Air Force Base has a great nature area, everything from beavers and coyotes to Banded King Fishers and Great Blue Heron. It also has an interesting and rapidly growing air museum and a range of interesting architecture.
Coloma is a foothills town worth visiting as it is where California really made its name with the discovery of gold. Nice little state park, good pie, and very picturesque.
Locke is a nice little town as was mentioned. Head a little further down the delta and you reach Rio Vista with a rapidly growing wind farm. SMUD are just now installing another 85 megawatts of wind turbines. They really are pretty striking up close. Not that I work there occasionally or anything.
A few unusual flood photos available at the moment. Roof sticking out the water type thing. Sure it'll still be pretty wet when you get here.
Oh, and I think getting to Tahoe is chains required at the moment with plenty of snow up there.
I'd also love to say hello if you are around. Not met Steve either so it could be fun.

Thanks Steven and Smith! I would be very happy to meet you guys, and anyone else who wants to join! I have not yet meet anyone from P.O.T.N. so far. We could have a beer somewhere.
I have just booked my hotel, downtown Folsom. I'm going to be there from the 20 to the 27.
Thanks!

Folsom is less than 10 minutes from my house. There is a decent brewhouse (BJ's) on East Bidwell in Folsom, as well as a real brew pub (40+ brews on tap) in old Folsom on Sutter Street (Yaegers). There is a restored railroad turntable in Old Folsom that is kind of interesting for angles and lines, and a couple of bridges (3 in less than half a mile) over the river there that are somewhat photogenic.
Send me an e-mail or PM me and I'll give you a phone number to contact me when you are in the area.
The same goes for you, Steve.

I'm thinking, assuming the weather is reasonable, a trip to Old Town Sacramento on Sunday the 22nd may be fun. Give everyone a chance to get their cameras out, provide a wide range of subject matter, and plenty of places to eat.
Greg, glad you survived, hope your back gets better quickly.

It was really nice to meet a couple of other PoTN folks to whom I now owe a couple of beers. We tried to put in a good show for the pub quiz but it wasn't something we knew was going on and certainly wasn't our reason for being there so we weren't suprised to have missed the first prize of some dodgy porn. If only they'd had a few photography questions.
The somewhat crappy attached photo, taken by a young woman powerless before Tiziano's Italian accent, shows Steven, Tiziano, and myself in glorious detail. Sorry, it was taken with an S70 rather than a DSLR. At least I didn't stoop as low as using my phone.
Oh, and big congratulations to Tiziano on the new baby. Actually a real baby too and not an L lens or something.

Just want to thank both Steve and CitizenSmith for the wonderful time I had! Next time we will manage to have a meeting with our photographic equipement, so, if we will be sober enough, we will shot some pics too, and we will not risk to win strange things!!!
By the way, I now know why CitizenSmith moved to digital cameras: his avatar is not casual: there is a blue light all over him, that always burns films!
Thank you guys!!!!
