Yeah, I've heard that one before. But you know, it would be awful if you actually took really bad pictures with your beautiful piece of equipment. Since no one has said I take bad pictures, at least to my face, I assume it's me and the camera (more me).

Possible retorts:

Oh what lovely handwriting! That must be an *excellent* pencil!
Oh, what wonderful cooking! You must have fantastic pots and pans!
Oh, what a beautiful painting! You must use really nice brushes!
Oh, what a nice shirt! They must have used some great needles on that one!
Oh, what a beautiful haircut! Your hairdresser must own some expensive scissors, huh?

Oh, the list goes on...

Something you'll have to get used to. It's a real pain but, it happens all the time! :)

Try washing your car and some bright spark will tell you that you can do theirs next.

Don't ask me why.

I honestly never heard that! I have heard "You take great pics" but never that camera takes great pics!
lol i would agree. But, give a pro a dinky little crappy, "box" camera from walmart and he's only gonna get as good a shot as the camera will allow. its 50/50 i think! Everything might be perfect... framing, composition, subject, perspective..etc.. but still look like crap because of the camera/lens.

Yep, that seems to go for any sort of work outside.

One that I hear quite a bit, which is sort of a waste of works is, "I will be back later", I suppose they are just being polite, but what other options are their really? "I will be back sooner", or "I will never be back"

Anyway I might just hit the next person who compliments the quality of my camera when they see a great shot I took  Oh well at least it is not as bad as the "turn you shutter sound off" on your DSLR, or the "What a crap camera, you can't use the LCD to take photos and their is no movie mode!".

That go me started, that is what you get when you work through the holidays...

Rant End.

The movie one, and the zoom one I heard during Xmas. What, you paid how much and you can't take movies and zoom(I used my 50mm). My brother(28) also said, The sound and time it takes the picture is off..I said, the sound is the picture being taken and his was response was, "what, it's not like that has a real shutter..." I couldn't control myself.

This is the same reason so many people complain about bad copies of lenses.

The camera helps(a lot) but when they see pictures that I took and others take with decent cameras mine are always better because my camera cost more. :( Or so they say.

I get that a lot, too. But now my co-workers tell ME I do a great job..... so I finally have them trained right.

LOL, Scott. Those are great retorts.

what a thought, that the equipment takes the shot for you... does this mean I can stay home, watch t.v. all day and have great photos to show for it cause I bought the camera?? Sari.

I think I would respond with something like, "So, you mean to tell me that all this time all I had to do was put the camera on the ground and tell it to take a great picture? WOW! Sheesh, if I had known that earlier, it would have saved me so much work."

ABSOLUTELY!

I do have a nice camera and it does take nice pictures! For $3200 for the body and $2000 spread out between three lenses, it BETTER take great pictures! If it didn’t, I would be pretty pi**ed off! I see nothing wrong with someone acknowledging that. Just take a look at how many here have a “gear list” that represents thousands of dollars – and more. Spend all that on gear that takes lousy pictures? I DON’T think so!

So whenever someone tells me that my camera takes great pictures, I say, “Thank you, it really does, doesn’t it.”

We had this a week ago, see here for more info...http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=123224

You could of course just say " no actually it doesn't, I do".

I will always remember a bloke coming into the pub where we were drinking and my boss saying to him, "are you the cab", to which he replied, "no, I'm the driver - the cab's outside". Nearly got himself punched!

Generally, people don't actually know what to say, so just blurt something out to make conversation. Guess you just need to beat them to it.

Ahhh... come on, just admit they have some reason in their non-informed opinion.
Why else would we have an EOS Forum?

<ducks and runs> :p ;)

If I take a picture with my Olympus P&S, I'll have a nice image.

If I take the same shot with my 20D, it'll be a nicer image.

There is a bit of truth in the statement...

Just point it at the ground completely out of focus and snap a picture. Show them what comes up, ask them if they still think the CAMERA takes great pictures.

I've had a couple of strong DOF shots printed.

"I thought your camera was good, the background is out of focus! Mine has everything in focus"..Good luck with it too. :p

Hmm never had that, have had people ask me how I do blur the background and could I show them how on their compact, you all know the answer, and it does support the "better cameras take better pictures" theory, but hey a Ferrari is faster then my Ford, but not if my grandmother is driving ;)

All you guys are doing is pushing a button, the camera is doing all the work, so in a sense, the camera is taking the picture, you're just pointing and pressing a button. :D

my mom and dad were over and my dad was looking at one of my pics my wife has framed and hanging on our wall, so he turns to my Mom and says, "look at this nice picture he took, you should paint this!" (my mom is an oil painter... I was like, "yeah mom" and my wife was thinking, "why paint it, its beautifull as a photo already, if ya want one, just ask!" lol
I know my dad didnt mean it to sound wrong but he was more or less just trying to contribute to my moms hobby.

I can't say I ever recall someone saying something like that too me. When I have my camera with me people say "that must be a really nice camera" and I tell them, yes it is... because it is a great camera. But when they see my photographs, I've never had anyone comment on the camera, they tell me I'm a good photographer.

i get that WAY too often from my friends, ofcourse.. they don't know i'm offended by it, they think they're complimenting me. but often i'll hear "thats a mad shot, i love your camera".

the worst is when i get into these friendly debates:

"oh, that shot looks great, your camera is mad"
"yeah, but i took the shot dude :P"
"yeah, but it's a angled shot of a car, i could do that... it's the camera"
"ok, heres my camera. take a photo of that car for me"
"how do i use it?"
"exactly."
"huh?"
"do you know what f.stop i used for that shot?"
"huh?"
"exactly."

JohnnyG

Yeah, I hear the same but the one comment that really gets me is "for what you paid for it, it better take good pictures"!!!!

I really like the retorts that Scottes suggested.

ROFL! Make sure you flip it into Manual mode, preset to ISO 100, f/22, 1/8000 shutter. ROFLMAO!

Ohh dear, that's fatal that is. <shakes head sadly>

;)

My head is not working from being out in -10 degrees trying to take shots in Vigelandparken in Oslo today.

I agree it's fatal. I gave my parents and two male friends a calendar with some of my photos this year too. My friend texted me saying "Yaaay, I love it! And now I want one for 2007, 2008, 2009....no pressure! hehe"

KevC

Hm. I've never gotten "your camera is great!!" or things along those lines, but I've gotten comments such as "Woah, such great quality!", "they look so crisp and vibrant!"

None of which attributes to my skill, and I must say it's the camera that allowed me to do this.

I don't claim to be a good photographer, but I completely agree my Drebel allowed me to get a narrow DOF that a PnS would never. Also, I agree that my nifty fifty got me those available lighting shots that a PnS would never either.
