Photoshop v.6

Quality post-processing is a must with the D30 if I understand all of the posts correctly. There have been numerous links on this forum to some great D30 sites, but they are all Photoshop V.6 biased.

As you all know, the D30 comes with v.5 LE which is not elegible for upgrade @$199 and the full version is $600.

Is there a better way? Everyone with the D30 received v.5 LE; is it trash? Canon must not have thought so because it came with the camera.

I would love to be able to do quality post-processing with v.5 LE if there are links on this subject. Besides, I already know how I want to spend my next $600, and it's not Photoshop!

That's how software business (and drug dealers) works - they give you something for free and you're hooked - the next step will cost you.

I think bundles should be done so that there should be a selection of extras which you can choose from.
I have three LE CD's which I haven't even touched. I would have liked to get something useful like a card reader instead.

But about photoshop: the vr. 6 is really worth it. But most of that stuff you can do with Photopaint 10, too, if you just get the action steps and repeat them.

Photoshop LE is not trash, neither is Photoshop Elements, its replacement. It's a little bit more limited (less color management power, etc.) but it performs most of the basic retouching functions you need, levels, curves, color balance, unsharpt mask, etc. It lacks automation though. But in my view its effective and in many cases all you need.

I had been using paint shop pro 6 and shuttered to think about getting PS 6.0 for $600.

Instead, I went on Ebay and got a brand new, full license, registerable (real - not pirated) CD with box and manual for $400. Keep your eye out, they usually always come up there. Just make sure it is someone with good feedback record and that you are getting a legal CD.

You could also try ebay for PS 5.5 (cheaper) and then also get the PS 6 upgrade CD.

On ebay, you should not have to pay more than $450 for PS6. If is it cheaper than $400, it is most likely a copy - so stay away.

Hi Phil,

I'm sorry if placed my words in wrong order. I meant "as I already had PS6 I did not have any use for LE's". My intention was not to belittle LE (or PaintShop or any other) but to say that bundled software is always paid in one way or another, and it would be great if I could choose the contents of a bundle from a preset selection of soft- or hardware, and not have something I don't really need.

I started with PS 5.0LE and went to Photoshop 6.0 from tere. Adobe was offering an inexpensive upgrade at that time. My advice, install and get to know LE and see what you really want to do. LE does a lot and even then, consider the upgrade to PS Elements from LE. Elements is a terrific program and will probably do what most people need.

Caution, if you really get into digital photography, I predict you will eventually get PS 6 or greater, great, but complex program

Thanks for the advice. I was concerned about LE when I visited Fred Miranda's site and saw the awesome work he does and found his plug-ins are only for the full Photoshop programs.

I actually have as yet to download a single image from my D30 (arrived yesterday) so I may even prefer the "soft" unsharpened look.

What if you received a challenge to shoot President Bush for Newsweek? Front Page. Would you be a little tweeked after looking at your inventory of resources?

My wife of 30 years actually gave me a challenge. She will give me five shots with my "new, expensive" camera to produce a picture of her she likes. To me she is still 21 y/o but my "new, expensive" camera had better see her the same way or we will both be sleeping in the motorhome!

You can see my problem. She is a perfect 10 who just turned 51 and I'll be damned if a stupid software program is going to get in the way of me being a hero.

Buuuutttt! I had better not spend another $600 to MAKE it happen!

For the record, Fred Miranda's actions will NOT work with Photoshop Elements. Elements will not support PS actions of any kind. While not in the same league as PS 6.0, Elements does what it does very well. It's a good choice when $$$ is a major consideration. Clearly, Pros and serious amateurs will end up with the full version of Photoshop. It's the only game in town, IMHO. Take care.

If you try to order the upgrade using the Adobe upgrade center site using the V.50LE product ID it will let you order it. Will this upgrade work? or do you have to have a full version V.50 pre-installed?

Like most upgrades I have purchased, I'll bet the upgrade install will verify the software you already have on your computer and, if it is LE, will refuse to upgrade. I wouldn't take the chance.

Hi, I didn't use the word "trash" in reference to your post, rather to the original post that asked if LE is "trash". So no need to apologize and I agree with your reply, i.e., Photoshop is worth its cost and for very serious playing it beats LE and Elements by far, but for someone just interested in limited post processing, it's overkill.
