G'day,
Finally orderd my 10d today and didnt know what lens to go with it as is my first slr. I wanted a 28/135 usm but ended up with a EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. Does anyone use this lens on the 10d body if so is it sharp and what lens would you buy next (sorry can't afford L glass yet!!!!) I do alot of outdoor 4wd pics.

If "L" is out of the question,.
...you could look at the 75-300 IS I think that is probably the telephoto range you should be looking at for your 4WD shots.
Depending on your budget, there is the Non IS version for half the price.
At the shorter end there is the 135mm f2.8 soft focus.
A lot of people including myself have had good luck with the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX. It sells for less than half of the Canon "L" but is an excellent lens with the 10D.
but in the same price range you COULD get the Canon 70-200mm f/4 "L"

The 24-85 is a good sharp lens. I think you will be pleased.

You mean SHOULD, dont you?
/Jeppe, switched his Sigma EX 70-200/2.8 for a EF 70-200/4L and have no regrets.

I started with the same configuration. I was pleasantly surprised by the sharpness and contrast of the 24-85 USM lens, expecially at 24mm. Even next to my L glass it fares reasonably - you would have to compare them side by side to notice the difference. I find where the greatest difference lies, is in out of focus objects - the L series have a wonderful bokeh, while the 24-85 is somewhat smeared. If you use it at f8-f11 or even f16, you will obtain wonderful results. The big advantage is the comparatively wide 24mm, which is, incidentally, considerably wider than the Nikon 24-85 AF-S lens.
I also own a 70-200 f4L - a lens I would highly recommend. They are, in my opinion, quite affordable (I got mine LIKE NEW on e*ay for US$500 with a couple of great B+W PRO filters). They are not much more brand new from B&H.
In addition to this I can also heartily recomend the 100 macro (the USM version is nice), and the cheap bt SHARP 50mm 1.8 (about US$70.00) and an absolute steal for an equivalent 80mm f1.8 portrait lens.

Also the 24-85 and the 70-200 f/4 both use the same size filter (67mm), so if you have one of the two allready it helps to be able to share filters between the two. Maybe not a big cost factor, but every little bit helps.

Really kwclay,.. that is a very good point.
I have a few lenses at 77mm,. so any "Pricey" filter I get at 77mm and I thn get step up rings for my other lenses.
Other than the prerequisite UV/Skylite filter/lens protector,.. I only need one size to fit all! :D

Just got the Canon 24-85 form my 10D. Had the 28-135IS on my D30 and sold it with the D30 when I purchased the 10D. I also have the Canon 75-300IS and felt the 24-85 would be a good mix. Another reason I went with the 24-85 is that it doesn't get the half moon blackout on the bottom of some photos using the built in flash. I got this on many shots with the 28-135IS. Somewhere on this board there was a post about any lens over with a diamater of 70MM gets this shadowing when using the internal flash.
The 10D with the 28-85 so far has been fantastic.
I purchased a Tamron 28-300XR lens and have good success with it in the 28 to 100 range, but I don't think I have the ability to hold it still enough in the 100 to 300 range. The 75-300IS with the Image Stabization does seem to help a bit.
Will probably be selling the 28-300 in the near future.

It would seem that Canon Australia dont import the EF 70-200/4Llens here anymore but i will find out for sure.
Once again thanks for sharing you knowledge with me and helping others enjoy this fantastic site
