View Full Version : ZoomBrowser - What a deficiency!!!

Hi,
Suppose you do this:
1) Download 300 pictures on your HD
2) Modify them, restyle etc.
3) Rename (can also be after one week, like in my case)
The sorting will be the one of the jpeg file date.
Then you wonder, well, certainly there is the way to sort the 300 photos according to their original shooting date (the one that appears in the properties).
You get: Name, Type, Date but...of course the date of the latest jpeg saving and not the original shooting date.
Result: Photo messed up and apparently no way other then the manual one to resort.
This is one of the biggest deficiency I have ever seen in a software.
I mean, the shooting date is the date 99% of people want their photos to be sorted out and they do not put this option in the program?
You may argue that I should have renamed after the restyling, therefore I had the sequencial file number as a reference, but gosh, sometimes with numbers is a mess when you have many pictures, that's why you immediately tend to rename.
Please, tell me I am dreaming...please.
Now I have two folders:
One with the right sequence but with extention .mpg
Another with the wrong sequence with ext. JPEG (It is supposed to be the source)
Is there any software that allows me to ask the JPEG files to match the sorting of the ones in mpg?
Thanks to anybody who can provide good suggestions.

Trey Breezebrowser at http://www.breezesys.com/, it extracts the timestamp from the EXIF-data and it handles RAW-files better than ZoomBrowser can.

Metallo,
I have not run into this related to image files yet,. but the problem you refer to is much deeper than Zoombrowser.
Try and do the same thing with detail view in your My documents folder.... (sort files by "Date Created")
....you can't! :(
Windows exploreer will only sort documnets by the "LAst modified" date,. it keeps no record of (or at least WON'T sort by) The Date Created!!!!!
On your home PC this may not seem like a huge hassle,. but try sifting through a thousand or so word.doc in a folder at work,. when you have a specific date in mind!!!!
Couple this with MS Words uncanny desire to update and "Date/time" feild in a document every time it is opened! (in other words if there is a form field where you enterred 8/9/2000 imbedded in a document, when you reopen the file to view or print, it automatically changes the date to todays date!!!!!) and since the file is resaved due to the automatic form feild update,. you now have a new date for the "last modified" date.
Insanity!

Breezebrowser doesn't solve the problem. It does the same thing.
Try the following with BreezeBrowser. First edit and save your picture and check date and time. Then go to Tools-Timestamp and check your date and time again. You'll see that the edited file will have the EXIF (ergo:original) date and time again.

I have read this thread with some interest and last night I downloaded the demo of breeze browser. I can only say that was so impressed I registered it today. I didn't play around with the EXIF settings though I saw the ability to export these settings and there is the ability to set the timestamp on the file to that stored in the EXIF data for creation date/time.
This has dramatically improved my photographic workflow when dealing with CRW files. It is so packed with features, I'd say that it is worth $44. The adobe plugin is $99 and I don't think it does as much. I can't compare the quality of the results because I don't have the adobe plugin. Can anyone let me know - Is there a difference?

I hit this problem a long time ago and took the low tech approach. When I rename my pics I keep the image number as the first 5 characters and add the date and time taken as the last 14 . i.e. if IMG_0123.JPG is a picture of Tower Bridge it becomes 00123_Tower_Bridge_20030623_1023.JPG. I add the leading zero so I can hadle sorting 99,999 pics. I also keep all the original images with their original names and batch burn them to CD's when I have a CD's worth. That way, as I learn more about post processing I can go back and have another go. I can also find the original picture relatively easily.
I use an Excel Macro I wrote to handle the renaming.
Hope this helps someone.

You can't get breezebrowser for the mac. I bought the Adobe plug-in and am very happy with it. Finally this RAW stuff is making sense.

I don't know the cure for sorting in Breezebrowser, but in WindowsXP you can sort on "Date Picture Taken"
1. Go to properties of folder (right mouse click on foldername)
2. Go to Customize tab: Choose Pictures or Photo album
3. Right click in folder (not on photo) and choose "Arrange Icons By" and choose "Picture Taken On"
If column "Date Picture Taken" doesn't show, do the following:
1. Click Menu/View/Choose Details...
2. Choose "Date Picture Taken"
3. Click OK
4. Right click in folder (not on photo) and choose "Arrange Icons By" and choose "Picture Taken On"
Cheers,

Thank you very much for your suggestion.
Indeed, this piece of software does everything I need, finally something good!
Thanks again.
