Sigma 50-500 with a 10D

Considering investing some of my hard earned cash in one of these sigma lens.

read several favorable reviews but nothing specifically with the 10D...anyone here got one?

with the 1.6 multiplier the range is equivalent to a massive 80-800mm

DO NOT Thionk about the 2X teleconverter with this lens.

Mind you it was dark,. backlit,. and at 300 meters so this is a full size crop,. but still the 2x just isn't usefull with that lens.

I have yet to try the 1.4X but I'm told that it won't be much better.

It is pretty heavy,. get a nice monopod if you go for this lens.

I have done a lot of shooting with it hand held as well,. but on a monpod it is great. I go hiking in the woods with it,. and it is a workout but managable.

The build quality seems top notch and it autofocuses pretty darn quick for such a beast! No it isn't a Canon 400 "L" IS,.. but it costs 1/4 the price.

However,. at nearly $900.00 you are getting VERY close to the Canon 100-400 IS price. I would say that lens is your the most reasonable comparison of value Vs. Focal length Vs. Quality.

Give that 100- 400 IS and the extra $500.00 or so it would cost some serious thought before buying the Sigma. You may loose 100mm,..but you will have IS for handheld shots and the lens will work better with a Canon teleconverter.

I don't have the Sigma 50-500mm zoom. I have the 170-500mm zoom. If you get either one, just make sure you get the optional trailer. It is kind of a pig to haul around.

FYI,

Just an update. I tried the Sigma 50-500mm EX with the 1.4X teleconverter today,. and it WORKS!

It is actaully a usable combo! Much better than the 2X converter which is a disaster. Still no autofocus,.(although I haven't tried the tape trick on this combo yet)

but very reasonable results. In a pinch it will do.
