Wedding on ship

Hi Everyone

Im shooting a wedding on a ship in March, it is a ship with all the sails etc.
I wonder if anyone has any tips for it? It won't be too rocky...i HOPE coz i get sea sick haha
But i am worried about the movement i guess, not getting proper angles, let's say i am swying one way and the couple are swaying the other way, im sure to get some off balance photo's?

Whoa! Is this your first wedding?

Well, you probably need a CP filter for the sky. Otherwise it sounds mighty tough. A sailing ship sounds romantic for the couple but absolute H*LL for the photographer. Good luck!!!

No it's my 2nd wedding, but i have 4 this year so trying to get a lot of info!

HAHA Geeez thanks...Hell for me :( no i should be fine, they are very casual people and i don't even think they are keen on professional shots, just want ones of the wedding ceremony, then they are getting off the ship and going down the pub hahaha!
(I think that's great!!)

OK well i'll get to looking for a filter and any other suggestions pelase fire away!!

I'd say do your best to get the shots straight, and if not, try to make sure there is something you can use for frame of reference for straightening later in post.

The CP filter is an excellent suggestion (I'd also suggest getting it soon so if you've never really used one you have some time to practice with it to get a feel for its use).

I wonder if some sort of IS might help in this situation, or make it worse...?

Oh, and make sure you take dramamine (sp?) (or something) for motion sickness since you mentioned getting motion sick :) (just don't take too much, I've heard one of the side effects of dramamine is hallucinations... probably not good if you're trying to shoot the bride and groom while dodging that huge attacking spider!)

Well, you and they will be on the same ship (I hope!), so you should all be rolling the same way. You should worry about getting, at least for formal shots, the picture when the ship is as level as possible mid-roll, so you don't have an obviously cock-eyed horizon (unless they want to boast about how rough it was).

One tip I can give it be aware of your horizon. Remember, the horizon is supposed to be horizonal in your shots!

I get seasick on a waterbed, I couldn't do it. :( But I do take a lot of wedding pictures in front of a white building with blue skies often and the CP is a must. I would get a filter for every lens. One time I had a shoot where the sun was so bright, no one got good exposure but me. I had CP filters on all my lenses, because I knew it was going to be bad, and most of my pictures were sharp. I told the father of the bride it was like putting sunglasses on the camera.

About the movement, isn't there a law that says when an object is in motion . . . so if everyone is moving, does it matter? Also, how big is the boat? Little boats, lots of movement. Big boat, little movement. Will the boat be anchored? That can influence the movement.

I would definitely put the camera strap (with the camera attached, of course) around my neck. If I had 2 cameras, I'd have both attached to me. There is always a level of uncertainty when you are on a boat. Believe me, I went on the ferry a lot in NYC when I was young. There is going to be swaying. Good luck!

HAHA big boat, less swaying but never the less still a bit there im sure! The filter is a good idea, i'll get 2 to put on both lenses.

My sea sickness isn't as bad as i think actually...i got really sick on a charter boat once, and on a ferry (The fumes!) but on our honeymoon recently i was on very rocky, big and small yachts so i think i have over come it (It's all in my head i think and coz i wanted to snorkel so much i just forgot about it!!)

So ill avoid taking those tablets incase i hallucinate the ship on fire and swim back to shore hahahahaha

Im going to suggest on our meeting that i get some formal shots when the ship is docked, then i can get some on the ground photo's maybe after we get back to shore, i think it will be nice with the ship in the background!

this is the ship (The date is 1987 BUT the ship is exactly the same!)

I jsut did a quick search on CP filter's....all that came up was UV filters? I have one of those - is this an "American" way of saying UV?????

Yeah, my brother had them on all his equipment so I knew it was the way to go. There is just so much you can do in bright sunlight. These filters really help. Nice boat!

Well, since you will be shooting during daylight, the shutter speeds will be fast... so don't worry about blurriness, just worry about angles and getting the exposures right if it's very sunny. Looks like an amazing ship!!

CP's are fun. Takes a little getting used to rotating the front of your lens to get the right effect (can also be used to help take pictures thru surfaces like water and glass that will reflect light. It won't get rid of everything, but it definitly helps).

btw - that ship looks incredible, I'd love to be able to at the least take a tour of a ship like that, it looks gorgeous!
