OK, when using my external strobes I can trigger the flash with my meter and get a solid reading for exposure where I need.
BUT,
when I'm using my 550EX and meter, I can't trigger the flash so how am going to set for exposure? When taking the meter reading there is no flash to sync off of. Yikes?????
Any help is really app.
Thanks
Tom

Why can't you manually fire the 550EX unit from its button?
Won't that give you the (I assume) reading on an external flash meter? Or is that what you are trying to do?

Thanks for taking the time

One way is to set the camera for 10 second delay shot. Get in front and let it fire on its own. Make sure the both the 550 and camera are in manual mode or you will measure the E-TTL pre-fire flash.

What flashmeter are you using? The ones I use have both wired and wireless modes. In wireless mode, you press the trigger button on the meter and they wait to see a flash so then you walk over to your camera and press the button.

Tom, I don't understand your question. If the 550EX is used on-camera, then it is right there at the camera position. You can manually fire the 550EX with the button on the 550EX.
Then, you can use an external meter to see what you got.
If you don't use an external meter, then you still have the 550EX and the camera together. Set it all for standard E-TTL operation and let it fly. A quick glance at the display will tell you if you are in the ballpark. Another glance at the histogram will tell you where you are in the ballpark.
What is your question?

I have a Minolta Flash Meter 4 and ca push the button on the meter to wait for a flash to go off. If yours is similar you should be able to push the button, run over to the camera and fire the flash. The meter usually has a tripod thread on the back with which to mount on a lightstand.
