how do you guys prepare the camera for cold outdoor shots? Does the camera need to be aclimatize to the temp before the user start shooting?

I always carry and extra battery in my pocket next to my body. The batteries do drain much quicker in cold weather. The issue is not going from warm to cold, the camera operates just fine. Coming back in from cold to warm you will get condensation. I just let the camera sit long enough for this to disipate on its own.

I've done alot of walking with my camera in -20's type weather and never had any issues.

I let everything sit for about 30 minutes except if there has to be that shot. Just like a telescope the currents inside a lens can distort an image if using a long lens. Everything changes shape when going through temperature changes so why would it not be a good idea to let things settle? Just like the post above the bigger problem is the condensation going from cold outside into a heated house or from an AC'd house to a warm outside.

When coming from a cold environment to a warm one I seal the camera and lens in a plastic bag.
This will stop condensation forming on the camera/lens.

As Sheldon mentioned, carry extra batteries next to your body as the cold has a tendency to drain them quickly. When not using the camera I keep it inside my jacket, more to protect it from the elements than worry about the cold.
When I come inside I let the camera warm up slowly to allow the condensation to clear.
Spent 4 hours on Monday outside in -15 weather and had no problems.
