I'm not sure what you want to know. What are we comparing?

I'll try to guess your question, so:
L means "luxury", and this means apart from better image quality (not in all L's) better construction, more accurate focusing, better flare control, better resale value among other things.
For those who have trouble reading lens name "codes":
In imaginary lens name "EF 24-70 f/2.8-3.5 L II UD IS USM"
EF = lens mount
24-70 = focal lenght
f/2.8-3.5 = min. aperture at 28mm - min. aperture at 70mm
L = luxury
II = series number
IS = image stabilizer
UD = Ultra-low Dispersion glass
USM = ultrasonic focus motor

I thought it stood for "L of a lot more expensive" ;-)
Well worth the extra cost though - at least mine are.

I'm interpreting Cardigan's questipon (???) differently,.. but there isn't much to go on?
There is no Canon 70-200 f/2.8 Non "L" they are all "L"

Ta very much for your replies. Just bought a second hand canon 70-200 2.8 lens and I couldn't see a 'L' on the pic.
Also,even though I haven't discussed this with my girlfriend I've bought a 10D over 6 months interest freeas well today
. If/when she finds out I've spent nearly £2,000 on camera tackle does anyone have a spare room for me ...

By the way,.. is your lens White?
..or black?
If its white,. it is Definatley "L"
If its black,.. ???
There are Black "L" lenses too,. but I don't think the 70-200 was ever anything but white,. and "L"
Have fun with that camera! :)

It's white Cyber Dane. Thanks mate
I know I've made the correct choice. Next thursday I'm buying a sigma 24-70- 2.8.
She knows about this lens.
She'll be OK about the 70-200 lens but I'm thinking of a better reasons than all the lads on the canon forum says it's great !!
Personally, I don't think it will wash...

My wife told me if I bought the 10D she was going to leave me. You know what? I'm going to really miss her! Also the 10D while it's high maintenance it dosen't talk back.

If it's an L lens, it must have a red decorative ring near the filter thread (white or black)
And Pekka, in the clasification, you miss the DO (difractive optics). It replaces the decorative red ring for a green one :)
