I came across this shot from a grocery store fire in June. It was a beautiful, bright sunny summer day but the smoke was so thick it felt like dusk. It was so dark I had to shoot at ISO 1250. Amazing what these Firefighters work in. Also reminds me of one of the reasons I tried Fireground photography. It is challenging. I believe that I have learned more about photography through trial and error on the Fireground than any place except one: This Forum! Not necessarily a great image, but a tough one to make. These Firefighters are working from the roof of an adjacent building.

Mills, we have a good deal of smoke in the Rural-Urban interface in North Florida. Keep posting those good fire photos. Most people have no idea what firefighters and other first responders go through.

Not necessarily a great image
Well, it's a great image in that it tells a much truer story about firefighting than motion pictures like Backdraft or that other awful recent one with John Travolta. There's so much more smoke involved with a large structure fire than the average citizen realizes, simply because smoke doesn't behave well on film or in still captures... I think your photo is at least something of a testimony to that.
Very authentic shot.

I've been through plenty of fires here in the Santa Barbara, California, area and I can tell first hand that both those images are about as "real" as it gets! I very much enjoy them and hope you will continue to share.
I have attached an image more along the style of fire fighting we are familiar with.

I realize that I didn't give much context of this fire in the first image so here's an overall view ... this is just north of the Gaviota tunnel on Hwy 101, about 20 miles NorthWest of Santa Barbara ... very near "Sideways Country".

Dwight, great shots. I am glad Mills started this. I have two shots of a crash fire on I-10 that shut down the Interstate because of the smoke and debris.

That first one is superb! Why do those big trucks always end up blocking EVERYTHING! :-)
