Resulting file is 56\" x 37\", 72 ppi-Why?

Hi I'm Steve, just joined the forum. I could sure use some help understanding why the resulting file from my EOS 1Ds is 56" x 37", 72 ppi when I open it in PS 6.0. Do I have any control I can set so the file will open with a pre-specified size and pixel count straight from the camera media into PS? Right now I am making the change after the file is loaded with PS IMAGE SIZE.

PrintShop uses 72 dpi as its default screen resolution. Might this be your problem?

The image file is a specific number of pixels wide and high based on the camera's "pixel resolution"


You monitor is displaying the image at 72 pixels per inch. Thus the massive resolution file of the 1Ds is way too big to fit on your screen.

When you print you will want to print at approx 300 PPI which will reduce that 52" X 37" size considerably.

You do NOT really want to alter the image size before you do any work to it. By printing from PS you will be able to dictate the size of the printed image. Also if you want to make smaller copies for emailing etc,. save COPIES at a lower resolution like 800X600.

I used to resize my images and resolution to the page size at 300 dpi. Now I use the crop tool in PhotoPaint or Photoshop with the ratio locked to give me the size I'm printing (4x6, 8.5 x 11, etc) and then select "Fit to page" when I print. For those of you who haven't tried this, it initially sets the size that you input, but you can then drag one of the corners out to fit around the larger image and it will maintain the ratio. No math involved. I find no difference in the output and the process is less time consuming.
