How much power does any IS USM lens drain from battery?

Does any canon IS USM lens drain considerable power from the lithium battery of the camera? Will the lens reduce the battery power by 10-20%?

It certainly drains some power, but I've never seen it spec'd out anywhere. How much it drains depends on how long you keep the IS engaged (shutter half-depressed). So that would be a very difficult number to determine since it would vary so greatly from person to person and shooting situation to shooting situation.

Buy a spare battery and don't worry about it too much.

Hi, I've got the 75-300mm I.S. and I've shot maybe 500-600 shots without emptying the batteries. Personally I think that the power use is minimal. Hope this helps.

I would think it would depend on which body, lens and one's style of usage. I have a 1DMarkII and often have a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS or 300mm f/2.8L mounted on it for 90 minutes during a concert and I tend to keep the IS on whenever the viewfinder is to my eye ... probably 30% of the time and use the same battery charge for two or three concerts across 2000-3000 actuations. On the other hand, if you have a smaller body and no battery grip I would expect a faster drainage. OTOH, given the enormous advantage IS gives your images, I would say, "Put another battery pack or two in your pocket and forget it!"

I would bet that the lens probably requires as much power as the LDC on the top of the camera. Barely enough to worry about. Bigger battery drain is turning on your camera then probably how much the lens uses.

Just a theory though.
