After several weeks of frustration I still can not get the Canon SW to recognize my G3 on a Win XP Pro system. I have downloaded all the patches and updates, uninstalled, reinstalled, all several times. Zoombrowser can't find the camera and Remote can not connect. One odd thing is that the WIA 6.0 update will never install correctly and always ends in an "Installation Failed" message with no explanation.

XP's camera and scanner wizard works fine with this camera, so I know the USB port is working. All other USB devices work fine, including the CF flash reader I've been using since Canon's POS software doesn't. Also same camera and Canon SW worked fine on this system booted under Win98SE.

Something is clear amiss in my installation, but I can't find it. Anyone got any ideas?

Have you upgraded to Windows XP Service Pack 1? That could explain it.

Thanks Johnny. Yes, I have all the XP service packs and hot fixes installed, but I will double check.

That might just be your problem right there. WIA needs to be installed correctly for the software to recognize the camera. Not sure why it won't install for you, though. I've installed the WIA on my XP without any problems. AAMOF, I've installed one for the G3 and another for the EOS 10D.

Here's something you might want to try. Plug in the camera to the USB port. XP should recognize the camera. Now, go into Control Panel | Systems | Hardware | Device Manager. When the device manager comes up, look for the camera in the device manager window and uninstall it. Uninstall the WIA driver, too, if it shows as being installed under "Add/Remove programs". Then shutdown the PC.

Unplug the camera and reboot the PC. Install the G3 WIA and reboot. Then connect the G3 when the system starts up again.

No guarantees but the above procedure worked for me when the Canon software stopped recognizing my camera (don't know why) a month or two back.

Thanks, I'll try it. I've come to the conclusion that the Canon SW is by and large a complete POS.

I'd recommend you get a card reader and try BreezeBrowser. It's free to try and works great. I use it to download, rotate and convert CRW files.
