View Full Version : Thoughts on a future Canon lens

I was looking at the Canon lens chart and thinking about what lenses are available and which ones I would like to get next.

Currently as they exist I would need to get both the 24-70/2.8L and the 70-200/2.8L IS to up my aperture ability with zooms.

However, as I have the 16-35 and the 100-400. I decided what I could really use was a lens the covering 28-135mm range with a f2.8 aperture (or better:-) capability and IS.

I say this because despite the fact it is not "L" the 28-135/3.5-5.6 lens stays on my camera the most, because it is my most flexible lens giving me some short and long range capabilties. The 24-70 is good for close up, but not quite enough range to cover the longer shots, while the 70-200 does not have the wide angle capability I need. so something with the better aperture of the "L" glass in the range of my 28-135 with IS would be a perfect complment to my existing "L" lenses. The current version, just does not cut it in low-light situations, where "L" glass would.

In a added wish, the ability to use the 1.4 or 2x extenders would also be nice. It would be the ultimate starter lens for the 1.6x digital cameras.

Any way what do you all think. Not that I can see a business reason for Canon to develop one and even if they did, it would take about a year for them to get it out. It just seems to be a missing range lens given the 16-35/17-40 and the 100-400. To avoid overlaping the 24-70 too much, I could probably live with a 30-135 range.

Just some thoughts.

It would be nice.

I don't think you will see any wide lenses where the 1.4X or 2X extenders will work. It's just a whole other can of worms that isn't worth tackling (I won't go so far as to say it's impossible,.. but there may be a photonics/physics expert that will :) )

Those particular extenders only function with Telephoto lenses.

Recognize the limits on extenders, but I can wish can't I :-). The smallest they work for are the 70-200s.

Yes, and how often du you use an extender below 150mm ? since above that, the focal length is covered with the lens itself. I have my two extenders for two lenses. My EF 300/4L and my EF 100/2.8 macro USM (not so often though, since 1:1 is quite enough).

But i think its more of an optical issue. You simply cant do W.A-Tele and still have great quality.
