View Full Version : GKPE: Events Calander 2006
FlyingPete

Right. I think now we have really got some momentum on this GKPE thing, so I thought (or rather my highly organised wife suggested) we put together an events calendar for 2006, or at least finalise some dates so people have plenty of advance warning, and perhaps decide the actual theme later on.
I think a formal monthly event is a bit too much, but perhaps a full GKPE every second month (6 per year) , or once a quarter (4 per year), must not over commit or it won't happen. I think once a quarter for a major is a good thing, with more causal short notice stuff randomly dotted around them.
Last one was 12th November, so three months after that is 11/12 February, or very close to Moppies jousting thingie ( a week later), so it might as well be anniversary weekend.
A sample calendar could be:
GKPE Part III - Weekend of 4/5 February
GKPE Part IV - Weekend of 6/7 May
GKPE Part V - Weekend of 5/6 August
GKPE Part VI - Weekend of 4/5 November
Covers the seasons as well!
Any thoughts?
Moppie

Sounds like a very good idea.
6 could be a bit much for large events, but 4 is a nice number, and leaves us lots of room for smaller more random gatherings.
Im glad Shoana is so well organised :)

I'm thinking I might come up to Auckland for a loong weekend 10-14th Feb. Would most people be around that weekend, perhaps just for a drink rather than just for a big expedition? Though I could probably do a day thing, with lessons from Wazza... I'll get a suite in a nice hotel, we can have a party and throw TVs out of 16th floor windows... or we could all just go to Wazza's house ;)

Actually... Lol
I think I'm forgetting something here.
The 11/12th I was asked a few weeks back, if I wanted to take photographs frm the air of the bikers ride.. There'll be like 1000 bikes, during a charity ride for Westpac chopper... I was gonna take some pics of them, rush back to the base, into the chopper, and do some shots over the harbour bridge with loads of bikes.
I'll have to contact them about it, see if they need my assistance still. Also i'll try and get a lift out to Piha one day, for a rescue mission. Then they'll dump me at the beach. I'll keep myself entertained with the ladies.

I'd hate to be caught in Auckland without the use of a car to get around as I like... though i'll probably have a few drinks here or there, and i'll need a way to get to wherever people are. Lucky Auckland has a great public transport system eh?! :p

Heh - the shore is finally getting it's crap together. Can't say I'm enjoying the constant road works on the motorways to rectify our lack of Buses, though.
As for the trapped without car comment. Understandable. But I'm sure many of us can help wher help is needed. Or perhaps, I'm jumping the gun here...

Thanks for the offer of dinner, I might take a raincheck on that because time is short, but I can help you out. I could do it Monday mid afternoon, probably, or maybe Sunday afternoon depending on how things go. If you're coming Saturday night there should be a few flash units around and we can do it there, or just bring yours with you. It's really not so hard, even after a few drinks... but bring the manuals for the flash units because sometimes they get a bit fiddly.

Nah don't take time off for it, it's really very simple. Another way is i'll show someone on the Saturday night, and they can shot you another time. Seriouly, all you do is put the flash on your camera onto master, the others onto slave, set your ratios, and you're there - nothing to it really. I worked it out from the flash manual.

Too bad those Alien Bees are soo big, that you can't bring them.
I would just like a book on wedding posing. It's my only issue. Flash units I can figure myself, however may get a Gary Fong lightsphere, and the lens order in the next week, or two.. ANd have them before my busy schedule in late late Feb..
Also, Tony ;)
Sometime around 22nd/23rd/24th March, I'm shooting the AUT graduation. Lots of formals, acceptance of certificates, hats etc.. ANd then a massive group shot. 120 people and most people are keen on buying shots. Sounds like it could be quite fun. My friend who's a student will be assisting me, and I know half the people there anyway, from clubbing in town in the early hours of a Sunday morning.
Anyway, if your umbrellas and anything spare on those 3 days, (they haven't booked/confirmed date as yet), it would be great. Otherwise I might have to hire something simple.. Or buy something.

Then I'll have a 17 and a 21inch which will mean Im going to need a REALLY high res graphics card.
tim
19th of January 2006 (Thu), 03:47
I rarely use my lightsphere any more, I use an on camera soft box, or plain flash bounced with the 580EX catchlight card.
You can only control 2 ratios really Weka. You have three channels, the master goes on A (use it for fill), the main goes on B (main light), and the C channel is only for hair/backlight - but since I have only 2 flashes i've never played with the C channel.

Slowly? that's the hard part. I really want a long zoom, but after last night a wide angle has moved up the wish list.
The other problem I have is that I really can't justify the cost of L glass (to myself or the CFO) but find myself wanting it anyway. Just wait until you come on a GKPE and see everyone else swinging their bid white (and black) lenses around!

From what I have seen most of them are more talanted than me!
My skill is still the biggest thing effecting the quality of my images. From time to time I am finding I am limited by my lenses and this is getting more frequent. I am a long way from reaching the potential of my 350D, I can't see a need to upgrade my camera body for some time!

From my observations and life experence I notice 2 things.
1) Some people are gifted in a area when we try to "compete" we fall short from this I learn. Wazza is regarded by many as the "lanscape" photographer, Tim the "wedding" photographer. We each have "our" area of intrest and skill. In part this come from some sort of relationship with "our" subject.
I would make a better woman photograher than a child one or pet one. Im not into kids or pets, but I love photographing woman (only allowed to shoot my wife though)
2) You cant be good at everything. Pick 1 thing and do it well. Tim makes money out of wedding photography, why he does it well, yet I have seen some of his landscape shots and I find nothing wrong with them.
I have decided to focus on moving water, waterfalls, surf etc. Why well (a) I love water so I enjoy it (b) as a ex surfer I understand waves I know when to shoot (c) I cant change mother nature, she provides me with the scene and there is nothing I can do to change it, this teaches me to work with what I have. People photography you have to "control" the subject. You have to tell them how to pose, where to look etc and my nature is that the way I do it is inclined to p#*s them off.
Pick a subject you enjoy, learn all you can about how to capture it and dont be affraid to either try things out or ask others. Im for ever searhing pbase or photo.net for waterfall photos to get ideas, or to see how others do it and the results they get.
When wazza came out the other night to the falls I learnt more from his 1 posted photo and the 5 min he spent with me showing me how to set my camera up than I had in the last month via the web.
PS: photography like everything else takes time to learn, but a person with passion will excel. I wonder what would happen if we all put down our "flash lenses" and for a month we only used a Canon 50mm F1.8, the cheapest you can get. Some of us would become masters because thats all we had so we used it to its max.
Just my thoughts :)

Hi All!
I'm back from my holidays in Manila! Looks like I've missed heaps of fun based on the many posts that tried catching up with...
Pretty heavy thoughts there Weka... your post script may be one of those things we should consider for a mini-GKPE. I'm sure that our creativity will be put to the test with the 50mm f/1.8 or 1.5. I still have heaps to learn...
Cheers!

After weka2000's great post, how about this for a mini-GKPE challenge, one prime (non-zoom) lens only, with cameras on full manual, manual focus, and no rapid fire!
It would be interesting to see the results from that! It would be like the days of old when you had no choice but to shoot like that.
Could but a shot limit up of 50-100, no deleting, simulating that old once use memory format called 'film'. We could even bad chimping :D

Hell I get more intrest in my thoughts than I do with my photos, somethings not right :o
Mind you I have spent years expressing my opinion even if most of the time no one asked for it
Who dosnt have a 50mm f1.8?
So what are the rules full manual on the camera, manual focus on the lens and no flash. If most have 50mm lets keep it with that that way we can compare apples with apples.
PS I just tryed out the rules and its not as easy as it sounds but I put in to practise something I was reading about histograms and why you should learn to use them and how to read them.
Foot zoom makes a come back.

You cant be good at everything.
I think photography is like anything. If you want to get really good at it you have to specialise. I'm not up to that phase yet. I'm having fun learning the basics, and finding out what I like to shoot.
At the moment i am enjoying night time stuff, like this:

FlyingPete

An actual date sorted yet?
The original proposed dates are as follows:
GKPE Part III - Weekend of 4/5 February
GKPE Part IV - Weekend of 6/7 May
GKPE Part V - Weekend of 5/6 August
GKPE Part VI - Weekend of 4/5 November
In reality GKPE Part III will now be 6/7 May. May there be many minis between now and then :D
What we are missing is a theme or destination, but one thing we will be doing for sure will be:
The Old School Photography Challenge
Tentative rules are for a 1-2 hour themed shoot are:
- Small shot limit to emulate film
- Manual focus, manual exposure, no rapid fire
- No chimping, no deleting images
- Preferably one prime lens (might have to be flexible on this one, especially for those with digital compacts ;) )
- Fixed ISO, fixed white balance, most probably daylight WB
Not sure about RAW vs JPEG, in reality the images you get off film are somewhere in between the two in terms of flexibility.
Anyone up to the challenge, and thoughts about the rules?

sounds like a great get-back-to-basics idea. I'm going to have trouble getting a fixed focal length though - suppose I could always tape up the zoomring (RED tape of course!)
Tape over the LCD too? As for locations, Wazza/Kirst's shot at Mt Vic reminded me I haven't been to North head for over 15 years - wonder if it still looks the same? could be a mini-GKPE locale...

I like the sound of this challenge Pete. Could it be perhaps a small series of photos, say on the theme "Yesterday". Maybe 3 or 4 shots. What about post-processing, given that some may not have PS. Even in the days of darkrooms, we could manipulate the images!

Im deffinitly keen, but would find it a bit of a challange.
All the metering and exposure adjustment is done on my LCD with the live preview, which also helps a lot with setting the exposure (despite what changophiles will tell you).
Basicly all the controls on my camera are geared around useing the LCD, unlike the DSLR where its only used for photo review, and adjusting menu settings.
The other problem I have is parralax error, but thats something I should be able to deal with, if required to use the viewfinder to compose.

That bugs me that does.
Hmmm, I think the main reason for the loss of EXIF data is things like PS's "Save for Web", which I tend to use alot myself, I had noticed a few weeks back that it stripped the tag, so I note the important details under the image. Anyone know how to get the save as for web to include EXIF?
You know we could make this more than just a GKPE thing, make it a forum wide contest?
Hmmm contest, not sure about that, I prefer challenge, then it is everyone showing and learning from their best shots, a contest (to me) implies a winner at the end?
