Just got back from Yosemite. No snow in the valley ... bummer. But mid day the sun hit Yosemite Falls and a rainbow effect was created....
What do you guys think?

great shot. very nice.
when where you there jgjulio? We went up on new years eve for 6 days, the first two days where horrible weather with non-stop rain, then early monday morning it snowed heavily for about an hour (apparently the only snow on the valley floor so far this year)
the snow that lay was constantly threatened by more rain throughout the day, and then there was a near blizzard again around sunset. from tuesday onwards the weather was bright and clear. good thing was, we got in and out of yosemite without needing chains, and we got a day and a half of decent snow coverage.

We arrived Monday. As we drove into the valley the weather changed from constant rain all the way up to wet snow. We stayed until Saturday morning. You and I were up there at the same time. We usually go up every Jan 1 or 2nd and stay for about 5 days. Last year the winter was spectacular. I was disappointed in that the valley had not much snow but Yosemite is IMO the most beautiful place in the world.
Here is the full shot of Yosemite falls:

Did you get any decent pictures?

Last year was the first time I'd visited Yosemite, and because of the heavy snow and dense fog I wasn't sure what I was looking at half the time. we've now been up there 4 times in the last 12 months (end of feb might be the next visit). I absolutely love it up there, perfect for hiking, photography and the amazing views. It's the first time I've had a tripod with me and we hiked up to Vernal Falls on tuesday, and then on over to Mirror lake. 5hours carrying a heavy tripod is not good for the back.
I think I got a few decent shots, but I ended up with about 7.5Gb of photos so I've plenty of PP ahead.
I got a few shots of Yosemite Falls like that. ;)
When we arrived on Sat during the big rain storms, the waterfalls where enormous! I've never seen Bridalveil that heavy.

I know what you mean about a heavy tripod. I have a bad back so long hikes are over for me until my back gets better.
The falls had more water in them this time due to all the heavy rains. I had never seen them so full this time of year. Bridelveil usually is a wisp and this time it was really coming down.
I want to return before next Jan this year. I would love to time it so that we can be there when the spring flowers are in bloom in the valley. Timing that and making reservations at Yosemite Lodge for the right time is always the trick.
If any of you guys and gals that frequent the park can suggest (predict) when the flowers will bloom I would appreciate it very much. (I won't hold you to the prediction if it does not pan out)

Nice shots. I have seen this effect before also but this time I had my 70-300mm DO lens and a tripod. I was able to get close and without camera shake.

Lovely image.. a great contrast with neil_r images. If you are looking for a light but robust tripod, I have a carbon fibre one from Feisol http://www.feisol.com/english/enconnect-n.htm. Very pleased with it.

Wow, that first shot is amazing.
I thought it was photoshopped, with a couple of layers. I couldn't imagine the size of the wall behind. (unitl I saw the next shot, to put it into perspective).. Great stuff!

Outstanding Julio! When were you there? I went up on Saturday for a few hours.
I saw your inquiry about shooting flowers. I can suggest a book "The Photograqpher's Guide to Yosemite" by Michael Frye ($8.95). Lots of great info!

Hikin Mike. Thanks for the compliment. We went to the valley from Jan 2 until Saturday morning. Disappointed that there was no snow in the valley but was able to get a few nice pictures.
I posted a comment and a question to you about your HDR technique with 3 exposures and using CS2. Mine come out ugly!
Thanks for the book suggestion I will look into it.

Thanks guys. I have seen the rainbow effect several times before but this time the effect was at the very bottom of the falls which made for a very interesting "lava, fire" look which I loved.

Planning on going there in May, you gonna be around? Someone with local knowledge about a place is invaluable, that and it would be nice to meet up with some POTNers while we're there. Anyone else?...............Joe
ps beautiful shots.......j

jopfin, I am still trying to decide when we are going to return. Having to juggle the work thing and wanting to be there when the spring flowers are in bloom.
It would be great to meet up with POTN members there.
