What the?
I've been using my new 10D for a couple of weeks and just now got around to registering it on the Canon website. However, the serial number, which I believe is/was on the bottom of the camera in the silver bar, has mostly been rubbed off. What does remain seems to rub off very easily. I assume the 'Body No:' on the box is the same thing, right?
Why bother putting a serial number on something if it's going to rub right off?

Serial and body number are the same. The Serial number/body number is also on the warranty card.

I had noticed the same thing. I'm not worried because the serial number is also stored inside the camera. If you look at the exif info, it also has the serial number. I am, however, disappointed to see that the number is gone on the body.

Well mine rubbed off the first day! I have only had the camera for about 3 weeks and am up to 1250 pictures, but the serial wore off before I hit 200! Luckily, it IS in the exif and also shows up in some proggies like the camera control proggie from Canon. I wonder why they bothered with a rub-off serial number??? Why not permantly mark it or emboss it?? Saved 25 cents I guess!

Where do you see the serial number in the Exif info? I am looking at the file properties of an uploaded JPEG, and I see all the Exif info but not the serial number.

Depends on what you are using to view it with.
PS7.0 shows it at the bottom of the exif view.
Windows XP properties, misses about 2/3rds the exif data, including owner and camera serial numbers.

I just looked at one of the uploaded JPEG's in Photoshop 7.0, as uploaded from the CF card, and it does indeed show lots more than the XP file properties view. But it doesn't show the serial number of the camera.

Try using Canon's File Viewer Utility. The Body Number should be shown at the end of exif info.

It is very strange that the serial number rubbed off but things can happen. The good news is that your camera's serial number is embedded in the EXIF information in every frame that you shoot. You can see this information (it is at the bottom the file) using the Canon FVU or BreezeBrowser or any of the other utilities that allow you to view your image files.

Yahoo! I rubbed off the silver paint and the serial number off my camera and underneat it, it says, "Congratulations! You've won a Canon EOS 1Ds!"

Mine says "you've won a new, hi-tech disposable digital camera!" What the hell is that?

I guess when I bought the battery grip I didn't know it had a dual purpose. My serial # looks like new. Of course it (serial #) and the camera have been shipped off to Canon for repairs/calibration.
