Don't want to start any polilical arguments here but,

Did you all see the number of cameras in and around the confirmation yesterday? There were at least 25 reporters sitting on the floor in front of the senators and Alito......Most of it was "white" lens also.

What was interesting on Fox News was that there was a camera on a tripod in focus behind Alito's head for all of the hearing.

Later

Rick

That must give an excellent perspective. Do you have a link for such photo.

Minor point: It's a hearing, not a trial...

Makes no difference, I guess I'm more used to Sandy. Been called that for as long as I can remember. Just as long as I'm not called "Late for Dinner"

If you go to the getty images site you might be able to find the photo Rick mentioned maybe not

Ha ha, if I had eyes like you Steve I would've checked on the blond sitting on the 3rd raw from the back (the third person). Hmm, maybe Rick's cam can help us here :D

Edit: Opps, Rick's cam wouldn't help, as it's in the back of the blond.

It is way too modern for the US Senate, remember it would have to be a government purchased camera :)

I think they are up to daguerreotype by now.

I suspect he shoots for a magazine somewhere.

are these photographers known as journalists?

No, they are called professional journalists. They are there for a reason...they earned it (this is a positive comment, I'm not being sarcastic).

Well, my 2c worth. If I assume there were no shooters from Der Spiegel and Pravda etc (eg - its not on the news here - and if overseas papers did run a story they would use an agency picture) the fact that there are so many shooters goes against the NPR types who insist the media is too concentrated and that the public is more and more in the pocket of conspiritors and propagandists of each persuasion. I wonder how many of the shooters are for newspapers? Ditto agencies, ditto magazines.

You forgot Le Mond, Carzee. Unless you mean those tabloids like Time and Newsweek. Well, they have nice photos, that's for sure.

To put things in perspective, it helps to read Der Spiegel, or The Economist, or Le Mond to have an idea about journalism. About what's going on in the world.

Edit: Otherwise head straight to Newsweek/Time for photos.

I left out one word - which lead to your reply: what I meant was --
"...who insist the US domestic media is too concentrated.."

I'm pointing to the sheer number of shooters, primarily---if not totally-- for the domestic media marketplace. The newspaper industry over there must be in a very healthy state.

I am surprised that no one has commented yet on the position of all of the photographers. Can you imagine sitting on the floor for an hour or better, not really being able to get up and stretch a bit every now and then?
Whats even worse, can you imagine how many shots these guys take in an hour? Imagine editting through all that, I mean unless it was an angry outburst or something showing real emotion what on earth could be much different from frame 1 to frame 645?
And that outburst can come at any second and can be over as fast as any ball on bat shot you can get at the local little league. Could you set like that for that long with the camera glued to your head constantly? I sure as hell couldn't.
I have a lot of respect for those types of photographers, they definately earn their money.

Jeff, notice when a big figure gives a speech, there won't be any photos taken, but the moment he/she ,say, move their hand...BOOM, lots of pictures are snapped.

photographers are attracted to Italian style speech delivery method. The guy has to talk like tony soprano. :)

There's always the chance that Teddy's head could explode and spew cheap whisky all over the Senate chambers. That's worth the wait. ;)

Me too - I can't sit in a chair that long, let alone on the floor. And realistically, these things are boring, especially for a photographer.

If that isn't enough to disuade anyone from wanting to be a news photog, nothing is. I can't imagine anything less desirable than sitting on the floor for hours, crammed between several other uncomfortable photographers, listening to all that blather, while my legs go cold and numb from lack of circulation. There ought to be some simple test they could give nominees for supreme court justice. Save everyone all that "process".
