I will be purchasing a 10D camera in the next day or 2.

That was the easy part. I am an amateur looking into going into the next level of sophistication. I think I have out-grown my Sony S85.

Here is the problem. I am considering the following lenses and am unable to make my mind up. The primary uses I am looking at are as follows:

1. Taking pics of my children/family
2. Taking pics when I travel, buildings, people in street etc
3. Taking portraits (full length/facial) of people indoors/outdoors

Kinda everything really. The emphasis is on quality of image and preferably natural light/low light work without flash. But who knows, 2 months down the road I may want to use flash as all my pictures might be coming out DARK!!!!!!!!!

So here is what I have narrowed down my choices to, and I need some advice.

f2.8 24-70L costing around $1349
f2.8 50mm Macro lens costing $279

Will these work for what I want to do and give razor sharp images? Alternatively I thought about the following setup instead of the 1 above:

f2.8 16-35L costing $1499
f2.8 50mm Macro lens costing $279

or even

f4 17-40L costing $799
f2.8 50mm Macro lens costing $279

Any suggestions? recommendations?
Will I really need the zoom capability of the 24-70?

Regards

I am thinking you are probably better off getting IS lenses rather than the f2.8 unless you are taking lower light action photography. For your needs the L lenses are probably more than is needed.

Shafiq,

I'll be selling a sigma 70-200mm APO in a few weeks.

For starting out it will suit you just fine.

Obviously with the 10D you'll magnify x1.6 giving a total focal lenght of 320mm.
