I'm an amateur photographer, but though the luck of networking found myself with a press pass for pitchforkmedia.com's intonation festival (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/features/live/festivals/intonation05/). In exchange for this pass and great seats to all the shows, I let them use my photos on their site.

However, one of the bands press people has emailed me to talk about buying/licensing some of them for use on their site/marketing/magazines. I don't know much more detail than that. I thought before I start serious talks I should get some information on how to handle myself first.

I've tried searching through the forums and have found some links to some great books to help with a photography business and some COB calculators. However, this isn't my job. And while I've spent a good deal of money on a DSLR and lens's... I really have no clue on a couple of things:

1. how much to sell them for? does this differ on how they use it? Also, I know there is never a 1 definative price, but any ranges out there that I should be in?
2. make sure that I still have the rights/get credit for them?

I am sure that I am missing some things so if anyone could help me out i'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
Tyler

Taking a look at the site, I can't see the bands are going to be rich... or publishing on the cover of Rolling Stone.

I'd take whatever they offer, plus a couple of T-shirts, some tickets and the memory that you had a good time, learnt alot and never went there for the cash.

I've lost count of the number of bands I've said that about, yet, there they are; world tours and the cover of Rolling Stone and Guitar Player Magazine.

Don't undersell yourself. I don't sell inidividual images, so I can't help on pricing there, but make sure you're comfortable with whatever is decided. Under no circustances would I allow them to dictate what they they pay. Even if they make a sweet offer, have something to counter it with, and work from there.

Good luck!

Wow, I gotta say, this is not reality. I spent 3 of the last 4 years of my life working at my college radio station, and Pitchfork is the end-all-be-all of the entire indie scene. Many of the bands listed are already very well known in their own right, or will be soon. Deerhoof, A.C. Newman, Four Tet, Broken Social Scene, Magnolia Elec. Co., Tortoise, Les Savy Fav, Xiu Xiu, etc. are all really big names. Maybe not for the entire population who only watches MTV and listens to Clearchannel radio, but for "music enthusiasts." And there are a lot of "music enthusiasts." I would love to have some imags of any of those artists in my portfolio, but that's beside the point - the point is - well damn, I've lost it. Anyway, get more than a t-shirt, for sure.

i once shot for this little foursome from England, i wasnt going to but they insisted and the lead singer promised he'd put in a good word with his sister for me so i said. "What the heck" and did it, I really knew these young guys were heading nowhere fast, they had long hair and played these electric guitars and had these songs that, at the time, seemed strange, But i did the shoot, did a few more before i told them "no more guys, thats enough time wasting for me" then they went over seas to The US and played on a TV show called, The Ed Sullivan Show and I lost out on being the main Photographer of THE BEATLES!!!
lol
actually, I think i might have dreamed that whole thing.. considering that Im only 40 years old!

Dont sell yourself short and definetly dont sell the bands short, who the heck knows WHAT the people will like next... Remember.. Vanilla Ice was once a big name!!
