Hey folks, somebody broke into Steve's account and is posting images.

:-)

Nice job Steve.

Arthur I love both. Excellent!

Anyone want to do a book, Boston By Night?

For $25 we can get 160 pages in softcover, which will get us probably 155 photos. It's all fairly easy to do as far as photos go. Just produce sharpened, ready-to-print shots that are about 5x7. Everyone could pick up to 8-10 of their favorite shots of Boston at night. Maybe we vote on them, or maybe we vote out any that are too similar, whatever.

But if everyone made their shots the right size, and sharpened them, I could put the book together in under an hour really.

The troublesome, time-consuming things are deciding the order to put them in, and if we have to pick and chose amongst ourselves.

Any comments?

Arthur, i think your greens are a bit off. They are looking a bit blue... i'm glad at least some of us got shots on that garage though :)

Scott, the sharpness is fantastic with that 10-22. You get hooked on what you can fit into an image :) hehe.

I'm getting a bit of noise on mine, not quite sure where it's coming from, wasn't really there until the last 2 months or so. May have to send the body into Canon for a checkup.

Great shots folks, i too am glad Steve posted. Finally.

You're right Brendan, I neutralized the orange and screwed up the greens in the process. I like your firetruck shot, you were practically standing next to it and yet got the whole thing in the frame and then some.

Scott, good idea about the book. Let me know when the photo submission is on. Was wondering where you disappeared to when everyone was shooting the firetrucks, then I saw your church shot...

I just want to thank everyone that went for an awesome night, I'm already looking forward to the next outing!

Here are two of my best

http://www.bensonpv.com/Bostonbynight/images/img_8119_processed.jpg
http://www.bensonpv.com/Bostonbynight/images/img_8061_processed.jpg

You can also find my other keepers here (http://www.bensonpv.com/Bostonbynight/)

Being my first real night shoot, I'm happy with the keepers. Seeing everyone else's photos and being there when they were being shot has really helped me in how to approach it next time. Nearly all of my photos last night were a bit to underexposed and the composition could have used some work. I think next time with a different approach and a real tripod I should be able to improve my keeper amount.

I would also support a Boston By Night book, although I don't know how many publishing quality images I'll be able to submit.

Thanks again everyone for an awesome night!

Brian

Brian, the horizon in the first shot isn't very level.

The second shot is excellent, but could be a little sharper. If you're not doing it already, I've found the best way to focus night shots is:
- Remove the camera from the tripod, allowing full range of motion
- Use a single focus point
- Focus by pointing at a light which is at the correct distance. Aiming at a light guarantees maximum contrast which guarantees correct focus.
- Switch the lens to Manual Focus so the focus point won't change.
- Back to tripod and shoot
(And don't forget that you switched the lens to Manual Fcous! I've done that more times...)

I know you were using a light tripod, so it could have been the wind at the harbor. Two things can help here:
- Get the tripod as low as possible by not using the thinnest leg sections. This will help stability immensely.
- It's a pain, but fill a 1-gallon jug with water and hang it from the center of the tripod right under the camera mount. The extra weight will add stability, and the water will absorb vibrations.

Seeing everyone else's photos and being there when they were being shot has really helped me in how to approach it next time.
This is probably the best thing about these shoots in my opinion. Seeing Brendan's shot of the Tobin Bridge shows me many things I did wrong on my shots of it. Arthur's shot of the Zakim looks great, and makes me realize that I never even thought about using a long lens from that garage (and I've been there twice).

It can be amazing to see how the person standing right next to you framed the shot, or picked a subject. Amazing.

Yeah i find that interesting too. At first you are like, oh man there is going to be 10 of us, and we are all standing next to each other... we are all going to have the same shots...

But then you get back, and although a couple are the same, it's amazing that most of them are totally different. We can be standing next to each other and have a completely different set. Pretty cool...

Are you *really* interested in doing a book of Boston By Night?

Some thoughts...

I'm willing to do all the assembly.

You'd need to send me up to 10 of your favorite shots, approximately 5x7, ready to print (post-processed, sharpened, everything). (I'm willing to help others, too.)

Nobody will make a profit on this - all dollars go to the printer.

It would be pretty cool to have such a book.

Having it when we shoot at night *might* reduce the hassles we sometimes get. If we can show that we're just a club shooting innocent pictures...

There would be some group discussion, like agreeing on a layout, etc, but there's only a few variables to decide.

If you're really interested in submitting some photos for this let me know.

Scott,

i would be game for such a book. that was my first time shooting Boston @ night ( i had a blast!!), so i dont have alot of different photos to offer, but if we picked a time to get photos in, then i think i could get some more personally to contribute.:)

getting kicked off that garage was a real bummer...alot of shots to be had.

Sounds good. Am rummaging through my shots as I type...

are other crop ratios possible, or are we sticking strictly to 5x7s?

Scottes

are other crop ratios possible, or are we sticking strictly to 5x7s?
I took a quick look at the Blurb software, and if we were looking for 1 photo per page, each photo as big as possible, then they'd have to fit into a 5x7 box, that is, one side maximum 2100 pixels (7" at 300dpi) and the other side maximum 1500 pixels (5" at 300dpi). So 1500x1500 is fine, 1500x1900 is fine, but 2100x1501 is too big.

Basically.

But we certainly have options. I just want to know if there's enough interest right now. I don't want to spend hours on this and find out that only 3 of us are interested.

Yes. Some security guard saw the bunch of us pull up and got the Boston Cop-On-Duty who whined, and then checked to see if it was OK with management if we stayed and took pictures. It wasn't. We got kicked out, after maybe 7 or 8 minutes of taking pictures.

Damn! In spite of all this, I feel so jealous that I was laying in a hotel room just a few blocks away from 9:40PM on.

Next time I will not schedule things so closely! Still disturbed about paying for a hotel I did not need! Oh well.

At Tanglewood tomorrow!!

I was actually thinking about using Blurb.com, the same as we used for the POTN Photo Book. They're less than half the price of Apple. With Blurb we can get a softcover book with 120 pages for $30. Apple is $88 for the same thing.

Some of you night shooters might be interested in this, if you have Lightroom. The discussion started out as an HDR discussion, then Permagrin stepped in with Lightroom methods for recovering details. I played with the methods on one of my Mother Church shots that I took 1.5 years ago. Scroll down and check out the pictures, then if you're interested start reading from permagrin's first post. Kinda interesting.

OK, so it seems that not many people is interested in a book of Boston at night...

I did have a couple more ideas for gatherings though, and I'll list all my ideas here...

King Richard's Faire (http://www.kingrichardsfaire.net/)
A Medieval/Renaissance Fair

"King Richard's Faire is a vivid recreation of a 16th century English marketplace at festival time. Actors, dancers, puppeteers, jugglers, minstrels, mimes, magicians and musicians perform each weekend for the favor of his Royal Highness King Richard.

Royalty and beggars, highwaymen and guards, knights and wenches, swordsmen and soothsayers roam throughout the 80 acre wooded village while artisans hawk and display a wide array of unique hand-made wares."

We need to check on whether or not they'll allow photography. I'll email if anyone is interested. Tickets are $25 I think.

Old Sturbridge Village (http://www.osv.org/)
A re-creation of a old Massachusetts village. This can be great in the fall with foliage, but you do get a bunch of tourists then, too.

"Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) is a history museum and learning resource that invites all visitors to find meaning, pleasure, relevance, and inspiration in the exploration of New England's past. It is a nonprofit, educational museum that is open year-round. The centerpiece of the museum is a re-created rural New England town of the 1830s set on more than 200 acres of historical landscape, encompassing a Center Village, Mills Area, and Countryside."

Tickets are $20.

Waterfalls Of New England

This would be a self-tour of a bunch of waterfalls and the Kancamagus trail in the White Mountains. There are a number of waterfalls - at least 5 or 6 - that are either roadside or a short 15-minute walk from the car. It would be a very long day, and we would probably want to rent a 15-person van and driver (we will be too tired to drive 2 hours home afterwards). I have no idea if this van-rental is even possible, let alone how much it would cost, but I'd want to keep it around $25 per person.

Photo Tour Of Cape Ann

Basically a self-tour run of Rt 127 around Cape Ann, covering Magnolia, Gloucester, and Rockport. I've done this trip many times, and we can spend a full day easily. Beaches, lighthouse, fishing ports, fancy houses, a castle, a quarry, and so on and on. There's a lot of stuff here.

This one would be free with a couple/few car-loads. We'd want to do this in off-season so we can get parking and don't have to pay for any parking. Doing this during foliage season gives an extra bonus but it's great with greenery, too.

Mount Washington

There's a few things we can do with Mt Washington. One idea is the Snow Cat ride in the winter. Could be interesting as hell, but could be limited since that would probably be the only thing to do at that time.

So maybe a non-winter ride up Mt Washington, combined with some other choices in the area. You could do the Cog Railway up, $49 a person, everyone gets to take pictures. Or take cars up and switch off drivers up and down. I'm not so sure if there are pull-offs though, where you could stop and let everyone out. That might not be possible. So it could be a lot of shooting out the open windows while moving.

This could be combined with something else in the area, like a road trip through the Kanc or Rt 302, or stops at some of the waterfalls that we don't hit on Waterfall Day, or tram up to the top of one of the sky resorts and make a day of mountain shooting, or whatever. Mt Washington alone is probably not worth it, but combined with something else it could be. There are plenty of attractions up there.

Let me know if you're interested, and if there's enough interest I'll start getting details.

Providence Night Shoot, September 1?

On certain nights through the summer Providence does a "Waterfire" event, with a lot of things going on downtown and fire floating on the river.

It could be something decent and different to shoot at night. I know the capitol building is cool, the skyline is nice, and I'm sure there's other stuff.

Does anyone else other than Don know Providence? (CDS is leaving for Africa before then, so he's out...)

There is also Keene's Pumpkin Festival in October.. http://www.pumpkinfestival.org/ I've done it a couple times and there are lots of pumpkins to photograph and at least one year, fireworks. I've parked at the normal parking area's and took the shuttle in and walked the mile back cause it was easier.

Providence Night Shoot - This looks interesting.
Waterfalls of New England - yup, a very long day.
Photo Tour Of Cape Ann - This sounds like fun.
Mt Washington - The cog is very expensive and after you do it once, isn't the most wonderful thing in the world. I found it a very long 2 hours with not much opportunity to take pictures. Driving up / down on the other hand is pretty nice. There are many places to stop on the way up / down because people's cars overheat so they have to give you places to stop. ;)

We did the pumpkin festival in Boston Common last year, and it was OK in my opinion. I didn't manage any decent pictures, really. Does Keene have anything else going on that night?

Excellent info on Mount Washington! That is sweet to have all the pull-offs. And I want to do a 200-megapixel stitch from the top. :-)

This one should be soon, though. 6:30 PM and the summit temp is 33F. Maybe next July? :-) Although I like the idea of getting snow of the other peaks.

Scottes, newbie here but I have shot in Roger Williams before. There's a little Japanese garden with bridges, banstands, a pond, carousel, and tons of interesting plants, trees, and flowers. There's a fair amount to shoot there. I have some shots from there on my site.

Waterfire should be an interesting shoot as well. The Worcester photo group I'm in is visiting there on Sept 1st. If you're looking to go with folks who know the area that might be an opportunity. Let me know if you want their site info. I don't want to look like a spammer!

Hey Guys Just a heads up the U.S.S Constitution will be tooling around Boston Harbor THIS Friday Aug 24th and also the Friday after. The 31st.

I think I will take the elevator ride up to the 14th floor observation deck on Atlantic Ave to see if I can see the Constitution. Anybody else have any other ideas ?
also that parking lot next to the Aquirium might work too ?

The parking lot next to the Aquarium is useless. There's no roof access, and there are walls with small holes in them so you'd be lucky to get a shot off. We didn't when we visited. Don't bother with that garage.

OK, but there are other buildings there, right? Like the Bandstand and the Temple To Music and the Japanese Gardens? Are any of those lit up in any way?

Otherwise, moonrise is at 9:19 PM and will be 80% illuminated, so it will be throwing a decent amount of light...

This is definitely lit up

And above it is the casino which is lit, and the museum towards the Zoo,.

It's a lot larger than it looks in the pic above, here's a close rangle but not such a great shot;

See how it dwarfs the streetlight to the left? It's BIG, like 40 people inside big. All those lights light up, and there's long rows of them, they have a warm glow like the old gaslights they are modeled after.

If i'm correct which is 50/50 :) i think the constitution when it sets sail, passes right by Castle Island/Fort Independence. Not a high angle shot, but certainly closer i'd suspect.

Found this on the site;

On the last two fridays of August 2007, USS Constitution will be sailing under her own power into Boston Harbor. She will take a cruise out to Deer Island and on the return trip will do a 21-gun salute when she passes Castle Island in South Boston. USS Constitution will leave port at 10am and should return around 1pm. These will be the last two times she will sail until 2010 due to some basic maintainence that will last two years. For more details click the Maintainence Availability and Drawings page on the home page.

Amazing.

Thanks for the advice, the focusing bits will definitely help next time. I think a large part of it was the tripod. I knew I had a tripod in the car, so I didn't grab my better one, not being sure how much car space there would be. But I found out when I got to Boston that it was my crappy $15 tripod I usually use to hold a flash. Next time I will be sure to be more prepared!

To be honest I didn't realize that it was even possible to create such amazing photographs of such caliber at some of the locations we were at. It has definitely increased my appreciation for how much can be done, and how much of it is the person behind the equipment.

I would be able to submit at least 3 photographs for a potential Boston By Night, if the other interest is there.

I have a potential photo outing.

There is going to be a large Civil War Reenactment in Winchendon, Ma on Oct 6th and 7th. It's called "The Battle of Murdock Farm" and looks like it will be quite the event.

I'm very local to it. It should provide some really great photo opportunities.

Here is the only website I could find for it, its directed more towards those going to be participating in it, but has some useful info. I believe it starts at 1:00 each day if my memory serves me correctly.

I see the person organizing it quite often so if there are any questions or we want to arrange something let me know, it could be a fun gathering!

More new trick for steadier shots: a new 055XProB tripod with 488RC2 head, what a sweet unit.

The ship is certainly sizable, and the channel is about 1/4-mile wide at that point, so you'll be about 1000 feet away. I'm thinking 24-70 is fine. (But don't yell at me if you fail to bring a 100mm! )

We'll definitely see each other. When you get there, you go down this long strip to a small parking lot. You park there, and you walk to the back of the fort which faces the water. Once there, it's only a 300ftx200ft area. We'll certainly notice each other.

...snip...

Tickets are $25 I think.

...snip...

I've never had a problem with my using my gear there. Well aside from the Liger getting a bit testy when he focused his attention on the front element of the lens.

If you plan on going, grab something to eat before you get inside the gates. IIRC they don't readmit you once you leave and it's kinda pricey food wise inside(you need to buy tickets and exchange them in for food).

Is that a 500 above held by the guy in the orange hat? It looks like he is hand holding that . . . .unless that "stick" overlapping the lens shade is some support?

He must have some strong arms, good reflexes and a solid stance!

Well folks Great photos ! ! !
I was there. However. my daughter Emily was very very upset at the loud noises that the jets had made so we had to leave shortly after arriving.

ha ha oh well. so my wife took her back to the van and I stayed with my son Colin on my shoulders. He LOVED it. Only photo I was able to take was a few snapshots of them running around the car. Oh well. Such is life. I hope to take them to the Westover Arifield the next show they have. That show I will make sure to bring some help. (Grandpa and grandma) ha ha ha That way I can be able to take a few shots. Eric I am glad you were able to go. you have some Great photos and the tips made me laugh. It was hot out on Sunday. If I have time tomorrow I can post the pics of my 2 and a half year old twins Emily and Coliln at the air show.

Nah, that stick was part of the fence, he's definitely hand holding it.

And all photos are 100 percent untouched. I didn't have time to crop / color balance anything. I just plugged my memory stick into my card reader at work. so sorry for them not being their "Best"

I thought that maybe I could hand hold mine with a BushHawk. . . . . No chance! What a waste of money. It seems so logical, but not for me.

If there are any clouds on the horizen, the Sunset from Prospect Park above the Esat side of the city is quite nice with the Capitol in the image. But, getting back down to Waterfire in a car would be a nightmare (traffic).

I asked CDS if he thought you could shoot Waterfire from Propect Park and he thought that the river may be blocked by some new buildings. I have been under the impression that Roger Williams Park closes at 5PM (not sure of that).

Anyway, I am up for whatever. Count me in!

You can't see Waterfire from Prospect Park. However, you can get some awesome sunset pics over the city from there. My wife and I usually park near Prospect Park and walk down college hill to Waterfire, thus avoiding the traffic.

We may go to waterfire this sat, still undecided.

Don, I think we might be looking to you for knowledge of Providence and ideas. The sunset thing is a given, and I'd love to hit Roger Williams Park with the hopes of getting something. Any other buildings downtown, good spots for skylines, high spots, anything? And of course WaterFire itself.

What time do we want to meet? And where? Does it make sense to meet at Prospect Park to catch the sunset and then move out from there?

OK! We culd meet at Prospect Park and do Sunset (around 7:25). Then walk down to Waterfire because parking would be gone by then (assume we are bringing tripods?).

I have zero experience with Roger Williams Park. I have read that it closes at 5PM and fee is $12 PP. Do you want to go to Roger Willaims late in day before 3 or so. Can anyone else give some insight into Roger Williams? Or I could scout it out today if needed.

I've never paid to get into the Park. Or are you guys talking about the Zoo? (Which I don;t care about.)

The park itself has a few interesting possibilities. Scroll back a page or two for some Infrared pics from CDS. I think they'd be cool at night. As to when... whenever. Moonrise is at 9:19 PM, so anytime after 10:30 would be plenty for the Temple since I don't think it's lit up.

Depends what you like. Federal Hill has scores of Italian Restaurants. What is your preference? I or We will probably grab early dinner as well!

Well, I can probably be convinced to do dinner if you all don't mind another.

And maybe we can get a parking space near Waterfire and leave one car there so we don't have to trudge back up Prospect Hill.

As to restaurants, a friend in work has given me a couple recommendations - but of course I forget them right now. I'll ask him again and post them tomorrow.

Here's what he said:
Cafe Nuovo would be my first suggestion for Waterfire specifically. About as centrally located as you could imagine. You could valet your car there and come back to it when you're done shooting.

Ruth Chris and capital grill are also right there but they're everywhere.

For sushi Haruki is right over the hill on the east side. .
Ruth Chris & Capitol Grille are *expensive* and could need reservations. But... Yum!

For you, 495 to 95 makes sense. I'll be blasting straight through Boston, or 128 if there's a traffic problem.

What we eat at depends on the time. Waterfire night is very busy in the city. We need to agree on a time and a Cuisine type. The range is there. Seafood, Italian (many),Steak (high end), Indian and eclectic.

I agree, the thing to do is sprinkle cars around the city. One at Prospect Park, One near the mouth of the River near the Seafood restaurant Hemingways (which has some good views around it), I usually park in the Legislators parking lot next to the State House (Capitol) which is not in use by anybody except those that know. Early, you can grab on street parking in front of the Amtrak station but it fills fast. DO NOT PARK IN THE MALL GARAGE! It only costsa $1 for 3 hours, but 2 weeks ago it took an hour to get out after Waterfire!

Lets agree on time (hopefully very early) for those that are having dinner first:

A count of people for dinner:

Then places to drop cars:

Then photo route. I can help on the city itself for Waterfire. But when it comes to Roger Williams Park, I am in the dark (no pun intended)

Anyone wants to talk, I am at 401-486-9501

PS: I have a friend whose Son has a field of Sunflowers at peak right now and he has invited me down to shoot them. This would be early tomorrow. If anyone is iterested PM or call me and I will ask if I can bring others!
