Seems like it is going to be a popular place.. You will even be able to get a picture or two of a rally car and sample Dunkin' iced tea: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1337382
I'd love to go but I'll be at the same wedding that Brendan will be at.

Just let me know where to be and when. I'm up for anything really.
I am meeting Steve and his wife at 12:30 PM and going to Coventry to shoot some Sunflowers. Then we will come back to Providence for an early dinner.
I would assume the meeting point to be Prospect Park around 6:30-6:45 (Sun sets at 7:20). Then down to the River by Hemingways also near Race Car setup. Then along the River up to the wide section where the ring of fires is (the main focus of Waterfire). Maybe shoot the Capitol Bld et al.
I assume the Roger Williams thing as you said after Moonrise.
Note that things will be crowded tonight as 37,000 additional people will be on the college campuses and some may come ot for Waterfire!
Anyone wanting to join for dinner etc, call me @401-486-9501

Providence is definitely a worthwhile town. We should absolutely go back when Steve and Jackie are back from Ireland. It was a good night.
Here's 3. But I didn't spend a whole lot of time processing them. And I have a few HDRs that need a lot of work, of course.

The cop stood stock-still for this. I think it was a 20-second exposure, and he was smiling the whole time. I think that made the shot.

I'm a senior at WPI in Worcester, MA. While I'm busy tomorrow with a day trip to Mount Washington (I'm hoping for some amazing photos from there), I'd love to get involved with some local photography activities, and I do consider Boston local.
My main focus would be to learn more from other photographers. So far I've mostly taught myself, and I'm starting to hit the limits of my equipment, an XTi and Sigma 20mm f/1.8.
Also, I'm severely lacking in the equipment section on this, but I'm interested in trying to get into motorsports photography. Does anyone know of any motorsports activities in the central NE area?

I know that there is (or was) a track just South of you in Thompson Ct , Thompson Speedway although I have not heard much about it lately. Paul Newman used to race there on occasion.
I am sure others can add to this. Good luck finding what you are looking for!

Awesome, thanks guys, I'll have to try checking some of that stuff out before the winter.
Mount Washington was kind of a bust for photography, the summit was 100% clouded with down to 5ft visibility at times (fun for driving up ;)). My glasses also got soaked after being outside at the summit for just a few minutes, so the camera didn't come out up on top. However, the rest of the road below cloud level afforded some neat shots, I'll have to see if any came out or not. I'd love to go back up on a sunny day...but I think I'll need to wait for next summer for that now.

Argh! It's already leaf time?!?!? Man, time flies...
Last year I did a circuit out Lake Winnepesaukee that was quite pretty. Maudslay State park in Newburyport is another gorgeous place with some interesting old building and bridges and such. The waterfalls near North Conway out to Lincoln - driving the Kanc before the tourists wake up is great, but it's a long early drive to get there by sunrise.
I want to find to some old buildings within the foliage this year. Places like the Wayside Grist Mill, Moore State Park, and some mills and covered bridges. Anyone have any ideas?
I guess I need to start making plans...

Yeah Wayside does sound like it could be great if there is usually color around it. I don't think that I have ever been there at that time of year,
Walked what seems like 5 miles around Allens Pond yesterday and only saw a few Egrets and a GBH, but way, way away!

If you are looking for a good place to shoot foliage in MA, hit route 2 westbound (from 95) and just drive. You can go as far as the mohawk trail and still find some AWESOME places to take foliage pictures.
I drive out to Gardner quite often for work and have found quite a few good places. Last year I missed a bunch of shots because like a fool I didn't pack my camera with me. Not this year. I have been waiting the full year to get this picture, and I will be sure to post it up when I get it.

But there's not really any other particulars spots that scream "photo op" in my opinion. It's gorgeous, sure, but I'd have to learn about some particular spots before I'd drive the 2 hours out there again.

ha. I know, pretty particular since route 2 is what, pretty much the span of the entire state?
the spot I am talking about is on route 2 westbound. I can't recall what exit it is, all I recall right now is that it is past the 495 Exit. I do know that there is a road exit (not highway offramp) that is right there. Its for Mt. Elam Road. If you get it just right, the way the leaves turn color and the canopy over a long roadway provide a great shot. Hopefully I will get it this year. I'd like to travel out to the mohawk trail at least once and get some pictures of the mountains/scenery too. 2 hour drive is quite a bit for a photo though ;)

I went there when I first got my camera, using the 18-55mm Kit lens. I was shooting in AV until I learned everything and was actually capable of shooting M, little did I realize I was shooting in M the entire time and none of my pictures came out.
True story.
I will be in Gardner next Tuesday, and will be stopping by the park to have round 2. :)

What kind of stuff do you like? There's a ton of stuff around.
For a cityscape, you can't behind going behind the Hyatt at the airport for a fantastic view of the Boston skyline. Just follow the signs to "Hotels" then to "Hyatt Hotel." Park in the lot to the right of the hotel - no charge, almost always. Go down towards the water and walk to the end. Mornings are recommended - the sub set behind the city (which can also be cool).
Memorial Drive, along the Cambridge side of the Charles River, offers a few places to stop for a completely different view of the city skyline.
Otherwise, what do you like? Or just spots in Boston proper?

The Cape has mostly Oak and Pine as native trees. There are some maples that have been planted, but frankly the Cape is not primarily a color destination. Not in my view anyway.
I would head West and North of Boston in the next couple of weeks.
If anyone disagrees with this, I hope that they will post about it. I just know that Oaks are NOT colorful and I don't ever recall seeing any blaze of color there!

Get on 6W and head over the Sag, Carver and some spots in Plymouth are pretty good. Better yet, find one of the fire towers and head on up for some nice panos. Just make sure to stay away from the one by the power plant in Manomet(the one off 3A) as the area has been tagged off limits and the guys with the M4s' may show up.

Hey Everyone,
I mentioned it a month or so ago, but this weekend is "The Battle of Murdock Farm" in Winchendon, Massachusetts. Its a big Civil War Reenactment. The actual battles are running from 1 to 3PM on Saturday and Sunday and the daily activities start at 8:00AM. It's supposed to be the same on Saturday and Sunday. I will be there at least one of those days, if not both.

No pictures, that's for sure. I've been working too much, and working for myself. I have vacation starting Oct 12 and I have 7 of 10 days booked doing stuff not related to photography. I'm hitting New York City for 2 days and might not have time for photography, and will be visiting Nantucket for a day and might not have transportation to do much photography. (Anyone know anything about Nantucket? Should I take my camera and take the island shuttle to any particular locations?)
It seems like a waste to visit NYC and Nantucket and not bring the camera...
As to personal stuff, i have 2 major projects - The POTN Photo Book Volume II is starting up and I'm preparing for that. Did you hear that, Boston Photographers?? I'd love to see more Boston involvement this time!!
Also, I've been working on doing rum tastings. The 2 I've got booked right now are 2-hour-long introductions to rum and rum history, along with tasting 12 different rums along the way. I'm working on setting up 2 more (one reason I'm visiting Nantucket) and thinking about doing a rum-and-food tasting if I can convince a local restaurant into doing it.
Would anyone here be interested in something like this? If I can convince that restaurant it would be about 2+ hours talking about and tasting 10 fine sipping rums, along with new and unique Chinese/Polynesian food to go along with it. Something like this would probably be $35, in Westford most likely. If I can't convince them to do unique foods it would be generic Chinese food and a bit cheaper.
Otherwise, one of the other tastings I'm trying to book would be a freebie at a liquor store in Westborough. And once I get business cards made up I'll be trying to convince liquor stores in the Boston area to do rum tastings, since many of them already do wine and whisky tastings.
If anyone's interested in attending a rum tasting - or rum & food like described - please let me know as it gives me an idea if I can drum up business for it.

I'd be interested in the rum tasting, and I know of three others who would probably be interested as well (not sure about the price, as we're all college students, but not everything is free).
I've been trying to get out to Purgatory Chasm the past few weekends, but I think this upcoming weekend will probably see it very busy as it'll be more of this Indian Summer along with a three day weekend.
I might be interested in the Civil War stuff on Sunday, Brian, if we both wind up going on Sunday would you want to carpool? I doubt my sole 20mm lens will be of much use, but it'd be cool to see some longer lenses that I'm looking at buying soon.

The four of us actually went to the fall beer beer festival at Julio's (in Westboro) last Sunday, had a lot of fun there. We only bought a six pack of Magic Hat (for the free pint glass!), but that's because we've been to Julio's at least twice a week for the past month, and we're on our second keg from them right now. It's always fun when you walk into a liquor store and they don't ask for ID because they know you...:D
Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera, so no fun shots from the beer festival .

As I get things booked I'll let you know. And liquor store tastings would be free - though there's always that subliminal desire for you to buy a bottle... Granted, split 4 ways it's much cheaper...
I think I would be interested. I know very little about Rum except for its place in our History. So if I can learn, I would love to. I only had Rum once that I remenber and that was on a cold night at a Ski lodge when I had a "Hot Buttered Rum"!
Let me knowwhen, where, how much. I need to be careful since I am up to my snout in Wine Dinners, Wine Club and Wine tastings. But I AM interested!
By the way, I was in Augusta, ME yesterday and drove shortest route by GPS to Salem, NH and the color was coming along nicely. Actually better than I thought it would be.

Had a great weekend at the Civil War Reenactment. Saturday was hot and the sunlight was very harsh, but Sunday was near perfect all around being much cooler with some scattered clouds. It was an impressive showing on the part of the reenactors and crowd, and a ton of fun to shoot. It was great to finally be able to put my new 100-400L to use, and as expected I got the "how many x zoom is that camera?".. This is one event I'm glad I didn't miss.
I haven't had a chance to go through all of them, but here are a few of the highlights from the weekend

Here's another of the Mother Church plaza. This one was particularly tricky to do the HDR. Those big light globes caused fits, yet I wanted the final image to clearly show the lighting elements inside the globes. This is, effectively, an 9-stop spread, going from -6 EV to +2. I say "effectively" since I had to take the lowest exposure and run that through RSE at -3, -2 and -1 EC. This one was interesting to do.

A very very hard thing to photograph.

Yes the G9 is a nice camera to carry around all the time. I always promise myself that I will take a DSLR. . . but I never do unless I ma specifically going out to make images.
One thing about these small cameras that I don't like is that they almost seem MORE complex in that so much is buried in so few buttons and wheels!

I did go out Saturday with the XTi and my new Cokin/Hitech GND filter. I figured I'd take a walk in the woods at a local park to practice with it. Well, the lesson I learned was not to use my threaded CP and the threaded Cokin Zpro at the same time. While adjusting the polarizer, I inadvertently unthreaded the Cokin and dropped it, snapping the GND in half. Doh!!! A replacement is on the way.

Well, we have about as much cash invested in bikes as we do in Photographic equipment and we are hardly using the bikes these days (I'll be 72 in Feb.). We have 2 CoMotion Tandems, (1 S & S Coupled), 1 Campy Record equipped Titanium (circa 1997), a bunch of Touring bikes and Pauline even has a Custom "Peter Mooney" (Is he still in business?) touring bike made for her sub 5 ft. body.
Anyway, it's a long story. Hope to get together with you one day to shoot a few images and maybe even draft you down a hill somewhere!

Looks like it was a great event! The last one we did in Boston was several years ago to benefit "battered women". A cold rain in Oct. and many with old squeeky wheels, chains and cranks showed. Because they were closing roads, they kept stopping the pack to allow the "slower" riders to catch up. We froze as we cooled off.
When digital came along, we stopped bringing cameras on the bike (early ones were $$$$). If we can get out this coming year, I will bring the G9 I just picked up.

I haven't been out very much lately (minus some media work I was doing) but my last trip out for fun I was in Boston at the Public Garden. That was a few weeks back though, can't believe I forgot to post up something from that trip. Here are some from my latest times out.

Nice shots. The one thing that jumped to mind was a paint ball to the lens.

Not to change the subject.... but anyone here a member of the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University or know anything about it? It seems like an interesting non-profit. They even offer a juried photo exhibit for their members.

I am actually going tomorrow night, but its for a practice, not a tournament. All outdoor places are closed for the winter for most tournament paintball players. They move to indoor fields for the colder weather. I will be at Boston Paintball in Somerville practicing. For once I get to set my camera down and pickup my gear and play. Its an indoor field, not sure if you have any interest and coming down to shoot. I personally have never shot indoors since I got my setup, so I am not sure how well it will work out.

Ah, I see. They had no choice but to cancel the event. The fields were literally destroyed. A lot of the netting was ripped down, and the field had to order and hang new netting inside of a week for the event to go off. Event turned out pretty good. I ended up sitting in my booth (yea, I got my own this time so I didnt have to loiter around you and Brendan :)) for most of the day unless a team hired me to take pictures for them.

Thanks for the link. I think I will watch it. Right now, it doesn't seem to offer too much given the distance for me. But, you never know. Thanks again.

Jason, is there anything you want to see, or would like to photograph? If so, some of us may be willing to meet up and show you around. Just remember that it's cold in Boston in January. Though not that much colder than BC.

I would be up for a Newbury Street run. That way , we could duck into coffee shops for hot expressos and such. Nothing near the water because of the cold wind.
