Jason, is there anything you want to see, or would like to photograph? If so, some of us may be willing to meet up and show you around. Just remember that it's cold in Boston in January. Though not that much colder than BC.

So, did anyone get any new (photographic) toys for the holidays?

My wife (who I asked not to spend a lot but she did anyway) got me some sweet toys- Sigma 10-20, a Wacom Intuos 6x8, a Joby mini tripod w/ a Manfrotto 484 head, and a Canon 50mm f1.8. She rocks. :) Of course, I got her a Toshiba laptop, so I guess we're even.

I took a few pics today with the 10-20, and wouldn't you know my Cokin Z fell off AGAIN. Luckily, it only made a small chip in my GND as it hit the sidewalk.

Yeah, a 500mm f1.8 would cost at least 50k!!!!

*sniff* no new toys for me.. Something about my wife not making much working in the schools these days. But her mom did give each of her kids a check for 10K. :p My wife just won't let me spend any of it.

Hello everyone,

Now that the holidays are over I feel I can actual be a part of the Meet up threads - cause I got real gear! ha!

Speedlite 430EX, 8 batteries and charger for it
50mm f/1.8 II - I'm in love!!
Cactus wireless trigger
Sto-Fen Omnibounce
Sunpak Tripod
Extra camera batteries (2)
New bag - Canon backpack
I'll be going out next weekend to get some down town Providence shots - we have a wedding to go to at the Biltmore and we have a room near the top floor for the night - I may just have to spend our 'spare time' taking pictures!

I hope everyone had a very Merry christmas and have a happy, healthy new year in 2008!

We hope everyone had safe and happy holidays.

Last year first night was only one of the many cold nights that we were out. I got a logan 650 framers edge mat cutter so we are going to try to do some of our own framing.

We should try to do some kind of winter meet I want to do some Portland head winter shots if anyone is interested we could plan something.

A Day Exploring Contemporary Photography
10 am — 4:30 pm
Sunday, February 3, 2008
Remis Auditorium

Explore the rich and varied aspects of contemporary photography in a daylong course led by curators, photographers, a printer/fabricator, and a gallery owner.

The Inside Story of Elton John's Photography Collection
Featuring works from 1916 to the present, Sir Elton John's collection of 5,000 photographs includes work by Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Irving Penn, and Horst P. Horst. Curator Jane Jackson reviews the methodology, themes, and history of Elton’s collecting, as well as his recent acquisitions.

Large-Format Color Photography in Today’s Art Market
Learn about large-format photography from an artist, a printer/fabricator, and a gallery owner: Boston photographer Laura McPhee recently exhibited forty large-scale photographs at the MFA; Marc Elliott, partner in Boston-based Color Services Company made them; and Bernard Toale sells them. Participate in a lively discussion of scale in today's art market.

Looking with Curators
Curators Karen Haas, William Stover, and Anne Havinga lead an exploration of German and Japanese photography in the exhibitions "Contemporary Outlook: German Photography: and "Contemporary Outlook: Japan," as well as an up-close look at photographs from the MFA collection.

A Photographer Speaks
Gain insight into Lalla Essaydi’s creative process, from her childhood experiences in Morocco to her return there to document her home. She explains how she uses the female body, the veil, and Arabic calligraphy in her work as a way to represent Arab culture to the West.
http://www.mfa.org/images/spacer.gifDaylong course: $125 MFA members, seniors, and students; $150 for nonmembers/general admission

COURSE IS LIMITED TO 75 PARTICIPANTS.
Lunch is included.

Hey, just post or call me @401-486-9501. We go out a lot. My zip is 02864-4259 which I thought was specific to my house. I have been looking around and can't find you guys.

Where are you hiding? At first I figured the Wine Cellar, but that used to be a darkroom and there is no room for anything other than wine racks and rusting film equipment! LOL again.

Hey Don,

I'll take you up on that in a few weeks. We've got a toddler so we get out very rarely but I'll let you know when we do.

We live in Lippitt Estates, not sure if thats near you or not. We do Saturday morning breakfasts at the TD Diner off Angell Rd. if you're ever up to it - they know us well, we're the young couple with the red headed toddler, so just ask if we've been in (we average 9:30 am)! ;)

How's the G9? Trying to photograph things must still be hard (getting a comfortable grip) considering how much smaller it is than what you are use to.

Kim: New Year is here! I am looking forward to us maybe having dinner with our "others" and lend you a DVD or 2.

Call me anytime 401-486-9501. Remember, We are retired and eat out a lot. I belong to some Wine Clubs but we should be able to pick a time that is good for you guys as well.

Lil' Man Snowmobile Rentals is just down the road from the school where I teach. I've read some things in the paper about that place. Apparently the owner is involved in some lawsuits and is supposedly kind of a jerk, but I don't personally know him or anything about his business.

I'd be more apt to do something in Boston, it's a lot closer for me, so I think there's much more of a chance of being able to show up to something in Boston.

That being said, the winter trails stuff sounds like it could be fun, I'm just not sure I'd have enough free time to do something like that. That also costs a bit more money than wandering around Boston...

Boston Convention & Exhibition Center
415 Summer Street
Boston, Massachusetts 02210

7:00pm

There is plenty of parking on the street at this location. For those taking the train it's a short walk from South Station. Just google map it. I see a lot of you are new to this thread, so i'll give you a quick rundown of how we usually do this.

We usually pack into 2-3 cars and drive to different locations. We occasionally stop for Hot chocolate/Coffee and typically spend about 3-4 hours shooting. Sometimes more. You are free to break off whenever you wish. It's a good idea to have a few dollars on you, in case we go to a parking garage that costs money and we all split, or we go through a toll.

I typically volunteer my car, which can hold 4/5 with gear.

I hope some old faces make it! As well as meeting some new ones.

As for locations, i think it's fair to say that i've got the city down. Not to toot my own horn.. but let's just say that we've extensively toured the city in the past 2 years. That being said, your arsenal mall location looks interesting, but may be a bit further than many want to travel. If you've got some other Boston locations in mind, pass em by here and we'll certainly add to the list if it's not already on there.

Maybe this'll help. Check out my Boston and Boston Night Galleries... if you see some locations in particular you'd like to visit, just let me know.

Nope, I'm pretty open-minded. I need a creative boost and I've seen a lot of cool architecture around Boston. I'm happy to let someone else point out the good stuff!

Turns out there's a street view of that smoke stack in Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=42.361688,-71.165547+(smoke+stack)&sll=42.361688,-71.165547&sspn=0.000955,0.002097&ie=UTF8&t=h&om=0&layer=c&cbll=42.361492,-71.165935&cbp=1,419.0689798080859,,0,-35.612579483249675&ll=42.362468,-71.165738&spn=0.001911,0.004195&z=18).

Nice. Great stuff in there. How accessible are the higher viewpoints to the general public? Like this one (http://picasaweb.google.com/boosting4/BostonNightPhotography/photo#4996808050277154834)?

Hmm yeah, i guess i should have qualified that. We can do the mostly ground level stuff, except we have some parking garages that afford quite decent views of the city. I do have a few 'other' locations, but those are essentially risking your freedom. hehe

We'll mostly be doing some downtown stuff. There are a few new ones i'd love to try out. I could list them all here, but honestly until you are there and see it, it won't matter much. I think most people whom have come out in the past have been quite happy with the locations. I may be speaking for them, but that's what i'd guess.

Just bring plenty of warm clothes, all your gear, and be ready for some fun shooting!

Fair enough. We'll save the other for another time. ;)

Is the Evo yours? I'll be arriving in a (probably very dirty) MINI. I'm going to be scouting some locations for a MINI shoot I'd like to do, as well. Parking garages are usually a good bet.

Yeah i used to drive the EVO. Now i drive a honda fit.

If you are looking for good places to shoot your mini, boy have i got a few locations for you;

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=&daddr=42.335973,-71.066635&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=18&sll=42.33562,-71.067054&sspn=0.003402,0.004667&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=18&om=0

Very good parking garage for lighting and cars.

Second, open lit up area that works great for cars;

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=12570772462824932292,42.356094,-71.057762&saddr=&daddr=42.35606,-71.057846&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=19&sll=42.35611,-71.057773&sspn=0.001701,0.002334&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=19&om=0

And lastly, the location in which we are meeting has a nice overhang when lit provides a huge even white light...

415 summer street. check that out as well.

I'll have to drive past that one. I don't see how that location works from the satellite or street views, but I'll take your word for it. :) Arch St.? Looks like it's in the middle of a bunch of tall buildings.

There's a neat old building on Purchase St. (~239 Purchase, if Google's right) that's the old, skinny hardware store sandwiched between the newer buildings. Between Summer and Congress Streets. Sort of an old vs. new thing. :)

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=boston,+ma&ie=UTF8&ll=42.355507,-71.055096&spn=0.003821,0.00839&z=17&om=0&layer=c&cbll=42.35356,-71.055209&cbp=1,336.2094467187553,,0,-43.1524676573551

I have a 2000 Subaru Legacy sedan, so if absolutely necessary I can drive and take three to four others, however I'd prefer if I don't have to drive. I'm not exactly familiar with the area, so I'd rather ride.

My friend unfortunately lost my tripod  (it wasn't a very good one anyways, but it was a tripod) so all I have is the XTi and lenses below, and a cheap monopod my dad gave me a couple months ago.

We probably should get a rough number of people going and people who have cars. I'll start the count. Add how many people going and how many people you can fit in your car (if you have one).

1 person going (may have one or two others, but doubtful).

3 people comfortably, though I'd prefer not to drive unless we need the extra car or maybe if someone else with GPS wants to ride with me.

I'd assume worst case, you can probably catch the T back to South Station from wherever we are. Might have to give yourself some extra time, but you'd be able to come along for at least two hours (depending on where in the city we are).

On another note, someone mentioned there was parking around/by the events center? Is it just free street parking? Also, how safe is it? Can I leave my car with nothing in it and be ok? I don't really know that area of Boston at all, when I go into Boston I'm usually over by Kenmore Square.

Yeah we double back sometimes to let people off, so you don't have to worry about this.

Should be a good time folks, i'm looking forward to meeting all the new faces. Just a last reminder... bring clothes for all sorts of weather. Yes the weather channel says 30 degress but with the sun down and if the wind picks up, you'll certainly feel it.

"Take I-93 South to Exit 20A “South Station.” At the end of the ramp, take a left at signal, onto Summer Street at South Station. Follow Summer St. for approximately 1 mile, the BCEC will be on your right."

Another set of their directions say Exit 23 "Purchase Street / South Station" At the end of the ramp continue onto Purchase Street, then take a left (.7 miles) onto Summer Street.

Does anyone know which one is right? Google and Mapquest agree with the second set of directions, but I know they have been playing down there.
