Well, last night I learned that I have a LOT to learn. I can't wait to try it again and perhaps do a bit better.

Here are a few. Let me know what you think.

Wow, fantastic shots everyone! I've started going through mine and these are my two favorites so far.

1) 3 shot hdr
http://www.bryanbzdula.com/newpics/albums/userpics/Boston-01-HDR.jpg

2) All PP done in camera RAW (except the frame)
http://www.bryanbzdula.com/newpics/albums/userpics/Boston-02.jpg

My wife and I had a great time and can't wait to do this again when the weather is warmer.

Sheesh after seeing my pics and all of yours. Is it something that I am doing or does my camera bite. Brenden was there when I took the pic he helped me set the settings and it still looks like butt.

Geez Furf, I dunno. Last time I went night shooting, I shot around f3.5 with about 5-15 second shutter speeds and was pretty happy with my shots. Last night, I shot most everything at f16 or f22 with 25 to 45 second shutter speeds and it seems most everything came out pretty crisp. I always shoot at ISO100 to keep the noise to a minimum. The thing about night shooting is there are no rules, except that a good tripod is essential (I'll be replacing my $30 Vangaurd pretty soon!). Just get out there and fiddle with your camera settings. Like Phil, I too still have a lot to learn.

Bryan and Phil, great stuff guys. Phil that fence one is interesting. Perfect example of people being in the same place and getting and entirely different shot. I think your shots are leaning to the right a bit though.

I had a good time, but it was indeed quite cold. We'll do another in the summer and perhaps start a little bit earlier. I'm surprised we lasted til almost 1am! :)

Thanks, mumbles. I agree - a bit right leaning. Does that indicate some inner pessimistic or optimistic pysche? ;)

So I finally got some of my photos up. More can be found here:
http://www.zooomr.com/photos/woloi/sets/28169/

I think some of mine came out decent, but I definitely still have a lot to learn, and some equipment to buy (maybe if I can get that ticket appealed I'll donate the money to the photography gods instead...). Definitely comment/critique everything, I figure that's the only way I'm going to learn how to do better :).

Big thanks to mumbles for showing us around and letting me borrow his tripod!

Oh, and I think the flares are because I had a cheap UV filter on my Sigma 20mm lens, which was probably a dumb idea. Something to keep in mind for next time...

Hey woloi -- Bummer about the speeding ticket. I got the same $200 one a couple of weeks ago driving to Plum Island to take some photos. The cop was in an unmarked sports car. In fact, he passed me going about 80mph and I made the mistake of following him. He pulled into the middle lane, let me pass, then pulled me over. What a jerk.

I like the clarity of the cityscape in #1, and love the light trails of the cars going over Zakim in #2. Good job.

Can't wait to do it again. I'll be sure to organize a photo bike tour of Boston with mumbles. Speaking of mumbles, look up "Boston Driver" in wikipedia and you'll probably see a picture of him! I mean that in a good way. It was a good thing I handed him the keys to my minivan -- I don't think I could have gotten us to those out of the way places even with him pretending to be my GPS.

Thanks :) I'm thinking of trying to maybe make a few HDR shots out of some of the cityscapes that I have multiple exposures of. Unfortunately, I didn't really meter properly (the XTi meter sucks in darkness) so I'm not sure how that'll come out.

I figure it's worth my time to fight the ticket, being a college student with "nothing better to do," as well as an electrical engineer.

The bike trip sounds like fun, depending on where I wind up after I graduate I would definitely join in on that. Less chance of speeding tickets too... :p

Brenden:

You guys (&gals?) got some really great shots! I forgot that this was your night.

Funny though, that I was parked on the right side of Summer. I was at the last spot on the right before the cab line before the BCC from 4PM til about 7PM.

While you were freezing I was getting paid to shoot the dismantling process of a new Dental Show Booth. Hey, I need the money (LOL), and I so suck at night shots (not to mention BIF). Looking forward to trying again when the Sun gets higher!

I am up for the Cat thing in the meantime!

Hey Don, i guess we just missed you. That's cool though. Dental Show. Interesting hehe. Well to be honest, i haven't had much luck finding a well-reputed Skidoo renter. I'll take another peak around, but i just want something easy and cheap that won't cost me a $1000. downpayment for a few hours. I'll see what's up.

Good shots everyone. Twas a good time. Now that we've had new and old folks come to the 'regular' locations, maybe we'll have to step it up a bit to some 'new' locations ;)

Thanks again, Brendan, for organizing the shoot. I can't believe you all kept going for another three hours after we bailed!! Sarah and I had a lot of fun, but I've got two dogs in crates in my basement and they get a little antsy after 8 hours or so. :P I haven't had time to do more than download and geotag my photos; I'll post some tonight, hopefully. I'd love to do this again!

PMK has me thinking, we should definitely do an area bike tour... We could cover so much ground without the limitations of parking/traffic. We'd have to keep a tight formation especially on the streets, but i'm really digging this idea. PMK, i know you've setup bike meets etc.. so maybe we should coordinate a route. Say for sometime in march when it's still cool but not hot outside. We have more than a couple bike nuts on here, like Don Lavange among others... Picture taking and getting physically fit, best of two worlds combined! :)

I'm just thinking out loud here, but parts of the minute man trail, (Hit Mt. Auburn cemetary, etc) , Storrow Drive, Public Gardens (We'd have to leave the bikes outside), parts of downtown... nothing hilly as besides myself there are a few of us that are out of shape, but mostly, it'll be flat.

Anyone interested in this? You don't need a road bike, i, myself will be using my Mountain Bike...

Done deal! I know a bunch of good bike routes in/around Boston. One of my favorites follows the Emerald Necklace and is both scenic and safe. I tend to ride urban on Sunday mornings since there's practically no traffic.

1) I live in a small town and not many are into photography.
2) I live in a small town and there isn't much traffic to do the traffic pictures.
3) Guess I'll have to make a big city trip or two in the future!

Great job all, very crisp, clear shots with some great perspectives!

I'm flattered you would ask, but I'm really just a PS hack. I generally try something like this type of sequence.

1) check out what "Auto Levels" does. Sometimes I'll keep it, other times. Sometimes, I'll use "Auto Contrast" instead (so it doesn't mess with the colors).

2) then I'll tweak with "Curves" to get the overall brightness I'm looking for.

3) if the colors are off (or if I'm looking to do something a bit different), I'll play with the "Color Balance." Usually I leave this alone.

4) if there are lot of shadows, I'll play with the the "Shadow/highlight" mode -- though this is a dangerous, pretty invasive mode.

5) I really like to de-saturate photos a bit -- not sure why, but I do.

6) lastly, I'll sometimes us the "Unsharpen Mask."

That's pretty much it, unless I want to get really giggy with the photo.

C&C welcome; click through for larger sizes. These are pretty much unretouched. The ones with the more "natural" colors have white balance adjusted, but otherwise, it's mostly just cropping what came out of the camera.

The first two are my favorites. I loved the location, and the clouds really cooperated. Everywhere else, I suffered from orange skies. I wish I'd been able to get under the Zakim, and that I'd taken time to shoot from the roof of the parking garage, but I guess I'll just have to go back on another night.

There are a couple of photos that are *really* out of whack on the map. My GPS wasn't cooperating very well at first. I do have a map of our travels here (http://bravo5.org/maps/potn_boston_20080202.html).

Thanks again, Brendan. I look forward to doing this again!

Haha, did you actually look at my pictures, my name is in the bottom corner... ;)

My name is Ian Woloschin, hence the handle. My dad actually made it for me years ago, and since my creativity is limited solely to photography, I've never bothered to make a new one.

My favorite is kpratte's pic of the Hood bottle -- cuz I'm in it!

Hey is your Sunday ride with the tandem? I just started working out again to get on the bike this year. Treadmill now, stationary in two weeks and MNT. bike by end of Feb. On the road by March (the plan, the plan)

Wait a minute. . . . She is in cold weather mode and you are in Summer mode! You are not "one of them" are you? LOL

Sorry, Don, I missed your post/question.

I also got 10-12 bikes, depending upon their state of being built up. I do a bunch of road tandeming in Boston but for the photo shoot, I'll use my cyclocross bike.

Maybe we could do a weekday kickoff of the season with a visit to the NE Flower Show (March 17-25, 2007) at the Bayside. Then go on and spend the evening shooting some of your special spots.

>Here's some rules:

>- 5 shots per day to the pool max.
>- you need to reside in the Greater Boston Area (within 100 miles)
>- or you need to post only shots of the Boston area if you don't reside in the area

I know nothing about flicker but these guys seem OK. My only quibble would be that Rule #1 should be "5 beers per day" instead of five shots. I don't hold my liquor well, and shots would pretty much wipe out my creativity.

:D

Maybe we should organize some sort of Mass Photo Event (... get it?). Hmm, or maybe beer and liquor don't mix?

Don, that's not a bad idea. Never shot a flower show. Is there much stuff that is picture worthy though? I'd probably want to buy a macro lens for that though, which i can't afford with everything else going on... oh wait, i can use my kenko tubes.

Snowmobile stuff... you know, i didn't hear great things about this one, but, how bad could it be right? We rent for a half day, and give it a shot;
http://www.nhsnowmobilerentals.com/ Actually, next weekend would be perfect. Monday is a holiday and it seems if we rent for full day on sunday, we get the second sled at 50% off. If we go halves... that's $160. for the whole day. I'd like to be there early, and also catch sundown...

Your powers of justification are impressive! There are always the lens rental companies. I think there's even one in Manchester, NH. Dunno if any of the local places do rentals without a major cash outlay. I used Rent Glass once and it worked out very well.

That does sound interesting. You wouldn't want to put two people to a sled, would you, though? Two people with backpacks full of gear would be tough. I bet you could get some great action shots. I'm thinking airborne snowmobile... :D

Ken, i meant two individual sleds. Mine with my pack and Don with his. $225. @ 50%, and $225. @ 100% /2 = $137.50 each. I'm going to go slow, us city folk don't go on those things very often, as a matter of fact it'll be my first time. :)

Lens rentals, yeah, i could justify for a major trip, my trip to the middle east, i'll be renting a 14L and maybe something else, but that's for a month (Don't ask what it'll cost). But for something like a flower show... i dunno, i'll just use my tubes which work quite well, especially with the 2.8.

I went to one last year and there's plenty of very interesting things to shoot although the crowd does tend to get rather thick so the challenge is trying to compose your shots while weaving through the masses.

Anyone know of any possibility of them opening the place early or staying open late for photographers (sorta like the Butterfly Place)?

I would tend to doubt it in the case of the Flower Show! I doubt that you would be wanting to do a lot of wide angle shots that would be difficult to compose with people. More smaller individual scenes and close ups of the accessories that add to gardens and landscapes.

And I think people in that setting would be courteous and allow a shot if you wanted a wider angle, if they saw you or if you asked them nicely.

Don, that means yes. He's a retard. I speak Snir... learned it about 4 years ago.

So $225. for full day 4th sled is free. That's about $168. per person for full day. Sounds sweet to me.

on a serious note, when is the last possible day that you need confirmation by? there is a slim chance that i will be in Detroit for some business that weekend but i won't know for sure until Friday or Monday at the latest.

i might be able to join you even if it is for an hour. just let me know what you plan on doing. i wouldn't mind meeting Jason after all these years of talking to him in the gear forum :)

I head out tomorrow night at 10pm down to Philly. I'm probably free from 3 until 10pm. Damn cold though. At the worst we could meet for a bit over food or something. I'm secretly hoping my hotel will hold my bag until then.

I am doing a Wine Dinner tomorrow night or I would come to Boston. On the other hand, if you feel like coming into RI, you are welcome to join us at Johnson and Wales, Seekonk at 6 PM,

I agree with the Newbury St. suggestion. You can walk it and catch some nice shots

Even if Snir gets hooked into a business trip on the weekend, it is still very reasonable. So we can wait until his schedule is firmed up and still not affect the plan. Sure hope he can make it!

I walked Newbury for about 10 minutes sans camera and went back to the hotel. Too damn cold and mad snow/rain. Stuck here now at the Back Bay amtrak station heading to Philly and you'd think that they would turn the damn heat on on the winter...

Heh...lucky it wasn't raining in the station! All day today, leaks all over campus. One of my clubs had rain in our projection booth (35/70mm Todd A/O projectors!) and in our sound equipment storage room. It's not supposed to rain inside!

Anyways, the snowmobile stuff sounds like fun, but way out of my price range this year...maybe next year. Hope you guys have fun and I'm looking forward to seeing some photos!

I emailed the guy at NH Rentals (Bartlett, NH (the one with the discounts),\. He responded with 2 words . . . "wing it" Not sure if this gives me peace of mind or fear. I guess by that he means we should not have a problem. A little un-nerving!

Subject: Questions

We are a group of 3 to 5 men (photo people) planning on a snowmobile rental (one each) on the early morning of Feb 24 (to get the discount). As usual in a group this large there are a few that are not firmly committed. What is the situation re reservations and the danger in showing up on that date with no reservations?

The snowmobiling would be a blast, but $160 is too steep for me right now. Sorry, guys.

Hey Don, you know how I know you're from Rhode Island?

I would have loved to do this, but more so than the $ is the fact Nikki is now 37 weeks pregnant, so she's looking to burst any minute now. I hung my skis up 2 weeks ago now.

Because you think it's a long way from here to there...

be careful with your +EV. It was crucial with slides and important on film. but with digital it's easier to bump up the exposure a tad in PP over dealing with blown highlights. I generally use +1EV. I also chimp like crazy for the first half hour to be sure I'm not blowing any highlights...

http://www.benjacobsen.com/wp-content/gallery/stowe-12-15-2007/IMG_3917.jpg

of course it's a lot easier when you're behind the lens while shooting. ;)

Nah. . . not a long way really, but if you want to be there for Sunrise or about that time then you have leave around 2:AM. That is Brendan's regular routine, but lazy me would rather go up the night before, have a nice quiet (or whatever) dinner, get a good nights sleep and enjoy the day and then assuming we drive home! LOL

I know this is a long shot, but, does anyone have a 82mm circular polarizer i could borrow for one day? I'd pay someone $20. for the day. If so, please PM. I've ordered one through hvstar.net , but it won't be here for 10 days from now. I need it this coming sunday.

donlavange

OK. The deal is done. So far we have 3 snowmobiles on reservation and deposit in Bartlett, NH at 8 AM on Sunday, March 24. They ask that we arrive 15 minutes before the reservation time for checkout of a beating heart etc. The long range forecast for next Sunday at this time is good!

http://www.nhsnowmobilerentals.com/New_Hampshire_snowmobile_rentals.htm#directions

Included, at this time is Brendan, Snir and Don (me). Still time for others to get on board, (I think?) These folks seemed to have the least demands (convoluted paper work) and "first born" to have to give up if something did not go as planned.

All I can add here is "Dress Warm", bring a Polarizer and keep "too much" sky out of it, and remember, in the modified words of the Clinton people, some 16 years ago "It is the Light Stupid!"

COME ON UP! This way folks:

I would LOVE to do this trip! I haven't been on a snomobile in years, but we used to ride all the time when I lived in Michigan. I just don't have the duds for snomobiling anymore and I have a feeling it could get pretty cold out there. Have a GREAT time and I'll look forward to the pictures!

I am soooooooo tempted! Is there still time to get another machine? I'd have to get some gloves and boots, but I think I can layer enough to make do without snow gear (as long as I don't tip over too many times!)

symbolphoto

I don't have any real snow gear either. I'm just going to layer. It's going to be sunny, so i'm not too concerned.
