I am soooooooo tempted! Is there still time to get another machine? I'd have to get some gloves and boots, but I think I can layer enough to make do without snow gear (as long as I don't tip over too many times!)

I believe that there is, but if you are REALLY interested, let me add on to our reservations because we are sharing in a discount plan that helps all! I think that it benefits us most when there is an even number of machines.

A couple questions before I commit...

What time are we meeting at the rental place? It's about a 2.5 hour drive for me but I don't mind getting up early (as long as it's not the night before!)

Also, its been a long time since I've done any sledding. Are you guys experienced snomobilers? I wouldn't want to hold you up if it takes me a while to get my "seat" back!

We are supposed to be there 15 minutes before (7:45 AM) to have them give you instructions etc. I think with maps etc, we could have a bunch of meeting points if and when we get separated. Blonde and Brendan will probably disappear into the forest, (LOL) but I will be just plugging along. This is NEW to me so I don't plan on damaging anything, most of all, one of the machines!

If you are interested . . . do it! Promise you won't be left alone. My cell is 401-486-9501. Callme, pm me, post, or email me @ tandem401@mac.com. I wii make the res if you wish,

Ok... I guess I'm in! I'm really looking forward to this. I'll see you all on Sunday!

UPDATE ON RENTALS:

Lil Man is saying that this Sunday does not qualify for the discount because it is a holiday / Vacation week!!!! So instead of $187 each it looks like it will be $225 each. What does that do to the plans of those committed?

We chose this Co because we thought we were going to get the discount and their "no crap policy" vs each of the others I contacted. Paper work, higher cost, no cancellations etc,

On gas and food. The trails are all within the National Forest so there are no facilities for food, gas etc. We need to trail ride to swing by Lil Man to gas up after about 4 hours and we can pick up food at a nearby deli, so that would be noon!

I am still in. Is any of this making anyone want out, , , , or excite new to opt in?

Let me know what you guys think... is there alternatives?

Well, technically it is the end of the school vacation week. All the hotels & B & B's are saying the same thing and are full.

I am easy on changing, but with the others the reservation thing is a firm commitment and they seem much more arrogant than these guys. Such as "Bring it back full or it will cost you $6 a gallon!" etc. Paper work in pages. Any allergies, hospitalization insurance. Really, almost a joke.

Hey! I'll buy lunch at the Deli! What a Sport I am. This trip is costing me a fortune. Now my wife wants to do some B & B's next week and I realize that I have lens envy and want the 16-35 f2.8L as well! I will probably show up with it, I mean all those sweeping vistas and other good reasons to NEED not just WANT one!

Ijust read back four pages, but I can't tell what it is that you are "in" for even after that, there was talk of snowmobiles, which seemed to get discounted, a railway walk on the Cape,..

Anyway, I might be able to make the date you are discussing ( 2/24 right? ) but wonder if someone could repost what you all are actually up to :)
If you'll have me.

Snowmobile stuff... you know, i didn't hear great things about this one, but, how bad could it be right? We rent for a half day, and give it a shot;
http://www.nhsnowmobilerentals.com/ Actually, next weekend would be perfect. Monday is a holiday and it seems if we rent for full day on sunday, we get the second sled at 50% off. If we go halves... that's $160. for the whole day. I'd like to be there early, and also catch sundown...

Next weekeend? Anyone else interested?

I happen to go up on a NH vacation week last year and was shocked as how dead it was.. Folks said it was packed the week before.

Must be nice to have a "lens fund". At my work, we have Volunteering layoffs and then if they don't get enough "volunteers" they are going to have involunteering layoffs. So, no "funds" right now till this all gets settled. :(

I thought you had all that stuff automated by now, or at least an apprentice to take over once in a while.

On another point, Brendan will probably be leaving around that time and you could sleep all the way up! Great ideas, HUH?

The Google map says 3 hours and 11 minutes from Boston. That assumes moderate speed and you can usually cut off 25 minutes or so, but that is no big deal when you are leaving that early.

I am going up as far as I can go and get a room the night before just because I probably would not do well thinking about being up at that time, or an hour earlier. The problem is that with the vacation stuff, all the motels are getting Premium rates and /or full!

Since the time we wanted to start off at 8AM was based on having to rent in the first hour they were open to get a discount that is not in play now, do you all want me to call and set up a later start time? Would that make it easier on all?

The best we can do is 9 to 5. They are ALL petrified of losing someone after dark and require everyone to be in by 5PM. But the Sun is setting there by 5:10 at present according to them I would think that if there are a few clouds around, we should get some good angled light as sunset approaches.

So now we have a starting time of 9 am with a checkin at 8:45 am for briefing. We will refuel and have a deli lunch (on me) around 12:30 or so. Then back on the trails returning by 5 pm.

So according to my estimate, Snir and Brendan have practically all night to sleep having to leave at the "Banker Hour" of about 5:15 or so. That is sleeping in for these guys based on my reading of their activities. Becca could grab 45 minutes more to polish her snowmobile racing skills (LOL).

Just check in here or PM me to confirm that you have the new time. How about it Jake, , , , want to join us now?

The most direct way for me is to go up 93, through Franconia, and hit 302 down to Bartlett. I'm in Derry, NH so it would be out of my way to go across and hit 95.

From what I read, the only CP that will not vignette at 16 on the 16-35 has to be custom made. Even the Lee does. Anyone know this for sure? Or able to suggest something on this subject.

It had slight discoloration on the edges, but nothing i couldn't fix in 2 seconds with photoshop. So the benefit outweighed the detraction. In this case.

They have a 82mm version, but it's not the 'Thin' model;

I found this pretty cheap one, specifically for wide glass;

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/108450-REG/Heliopan_708274_82_mm_Kaeseman_Linear.html

There are some slim ones for around $200. i just don't want to be the first to try them out and return them. I'll wait until someone has proven one to work and buy that.

Thread posted here, with no conclusive results;

And by conclusive, i mean, shots with Full Frame @ 16mm, posting an image. I have concerns that are a little more than, "Yeah go for it" . :)

Haha, i don't want most ecinomical if it sacrifices quality. But $400. for a filter... i just can't justify that at this point in my life. :lol:

Is that open in the winter? For some reason I thought they closed it at the top during the winter...The Kank is open in the Winter, though if it is snowing, it's an interesting ride. Bear Notch road is what gets closed down in the Winter. It connects the Kank to Bartlett.

Having driven both ways, 93, 3, to 302 is easier, flatter, etc. Conway will suck if you don't know the back roads, but for the time you guys are going up, shouldn't matter too much.

It takes a 77mm. If someone has one I could borrow, that would be great! I plan on getting one, but I've already spent my photography budget for the next couple of months!

Yeah. I will have my 77 and a cheapo 82 for my new lens (Brendan-Envy), so I wont be using the 77 exclusively. See. . . . . I told you I would stick with you!

I don't know for sure, but I make the assumption that these trails reach elevations that will give us "pull offs" from which we can get some amazing views.

Becca says that there is not much storage space on a Snowmobile! I can't imagine bringing my 500. Can't hand hold it and the Gimbal prevents me from using the tripod for the wide angle without switching heads.

I will bring the 70-200 and both TC's.

I have not heard about trail restrictions, but some states (most) have a law that says unregistered powered vehicles cannot use roadways. Have not seen it enforced around here lately though. I will try to find out.

Come to think of it, when I asked about fuel and food is when they said that all the trails are within the National Forest and we would have to return for fuel after 4 hours. That is when we have our gourmet deli lunch! I think that implies that you cannot use roads or venture far from trails given how many miles of them exist!

donlavange

I got this off a NH website:

Where can I ride?
More than 6,900 miles of snowmobile trails may be open in the winter to most types of snowmobiles and OHRVs. Landowner permission is required to operate on property of another. You can only ride on trails designated and signed for your type of vehicle. Snowmobile trails are only open during the winter months unless written landowner permission is obtained. The NH Bureau of Trails and the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association print statewide Snowmobile Trail maps. Local trail maps are printed and distributed by local clubs. <return to top of page>

Beyond this, I got from another site that you cannot operate a Snowmobile if your drivers license is under suspension and you MUST SHOW YOUR VALID DRIVERS LICENSE TO RENT TO OPERATE A SNOWMOBILE IN NH! I assume that everyone is ok on that score! Although, I just had a renewal and I am waiting for my plastic license. The Registry gave me an 8.5" x 11" paper that I folded and put in my wallet. At least, I think it is still there!

Do we also need have everyone confirm that they know that they should be bringing some bungy type cords for securing gear?

I'm not that concerned about storage. I'm bringing my small backpack that I can hook my tripod to so I can either ride with it in front of me or wear it. I'm not planning on getting too wild out there, so I don't think I will have a problem.

I may have some bungee cords in my trunk. I'll check and see if they are still around.

Boy! Much as been going on since I was last on here. Snir not well (sleep well and don't forget chicken soup!). Brendan's approaching senility making him forget we delayed it to 8:45 to and Becca holding it together.

I am in North Conway and drove to Lil Man after dinner tonight. Place is roped off because of the hour, but you can hardly see the building for the snow plowed up around it. It is on your right assuming you come down 302 from 3 and 93. Just before you enter the small town of Bartlett.

I made a major screw up today as well. I had purchased a lot of gear at Bass Pro Shops for the event. Waterproof snowpants, thin and open finger gloves, balaclava, but instead of packing them in my suitcase, I had then in a plastic bag and not being used to traveling with plastic bags as luggage, I did not load them. I just need to find some gloves in the AM so I may not get to LIL MAN much earlier than you.

If it turns out that Snir does not recover (I know he will! Cause he Strong like bull!), call me at 401-486-9501 so I can release that 4th machine.

I came up via Boston, Melrose , 95 and 16 because I had a destination of North Conway for my hotel. Also I gave in and stopped at Hunts in Melrose for a Hoya Pro one HMC CPL. On the way up on the road South of Conway, I passed some small towns that were breathtaking with houses, white churches, hills and pines. Perfect for sunrise shots. I want to stay!!!

I could easily do a week or longer here. Get well Snir!

http://www.brendanstewart.net/random/wayoff.jpgThe stuff on the web looks fine to me. The blue sky on the calibrated one is a bit weird. I tried using Lightroom on the PC and found that I couldn't figure out how to get it to not mess up on displaying images. It just fiddled with the White Balance and made all of the pictures look too warm, too cold, etc.

I use the normal Canon utilities and Acdsee http://store.acdsee.com/store/acd/DisplayProductDetailsPage/productID.78701300

Neither seem to mess with the White Balance.
